Mark, speak to your GP about whether your weight (usually has to be a BMI of 40 or higher) or co-morbidity factors if your BMI is lower (sleep apnea, incontinence, high blood pressure, joint pain, or diabetes) would qualify you for your insurance to cover. Usually all it takes is your doctor's recommendation with a with at least 12 month documentation of weigh-ins (to show this is a chronic condition) and you are on your way (keep in mind this is when it may take an additional 6-12 months before actual surgery). Be aware, however, most doctors do not recommend the lap-band, as it has a higher complication rate (band slippage, band too loose or constrictive) and will more likely suggest a gastric sleeve or bypass depending on your health issues, both of which a non-reversible surgeries.
