A study in the Medical Journal Metabolism (1988 Oct;37(10):930-6) by DS Weigle, etal. showed that obese people who lost weight and then tried to maintain that weight loss had a resting energy expenditure only 75% of normal weight people. In other words, the diets these people were on caused their body to become more efficient with food and it took 25% less food to maintain the same weight as people who had never been on a diet.

So there is a reason why it's so hard to keep weight off for dieters.

Another study showed that the main cause of this efficiency was a reduction in thyroid hormone of 33%. So effectively these people became hypothyroid and a well known side effect of that illness is weight gain.

That makes total sense. I guess thats why when we do get the weight off, the way we do it MUST be a life style as well. Atkins talks about that some...as does a program called "curves".

If we starve to loose weight, there is no way to live that kind of life forever...and if our bodies become more efficient in what we put in our mouths when we begin to eat "normal" again, it stand to reason that we will gain the weight back and then some. I think it was "goincrusin" who said on here in a posting that to loose weight you have to eat. The trick is eating smart. My "friend" Atkins says much the same thing.

Moral of the story for me??? Eat, and eat right. And know it will have to be a plan I can live with my whole life.
