There are some complicated methods to figure out how many calories you need but an easy way to figure it out is to first take what you want to weight and multiply that by:
10 if you are not very active. You sit down most of the day and drive or ride wherever possible.
12 if you are lightly active. You sit most of the day, but you move around for two to four hours of the day.
14 if you are moderately active. You do some amount of regular exercise four to five times a week or your job requires physical labor.
16 if you are very physically active. Your job requires heavy physical labor or you are physically active for four or more hours each day--and you do very little sitting or standing around.
For me, strict calorie control was the only way. Coming up in April it will be 2 years since I started my diet. I lost 35 pounds by eating 1200 calories a day, every single day until I lost the weight. Then I added 50 calories a month or so until I came to a point where I wasn’t losing anymore. Now I eat between 1350 and 1400 calories a day to maintain between 120-125. I don’t exercise at all. I also use a free online calorie and diet web site at www.******.com. It is awesome and totally free. It helped tremendously to keep track of every calorie.
Good luck to you.
