My experience with phentermine...

Hi,

I love phentermine, but I think I'm going to have to stop taking it. I got it off the internet last year, and lost about 10 pounds (which was about all I had to lose). I stopped taking it (will get to that later), but have recently started taking it again. My problem is that I'm a binge-eater, and I absolutely have no control sometimes, and phentermine seems to be the only thing that helps. I lose my appetite, and don't even think about food. In fact, I almost have to make myself eat. My energy level goes up, too. But.....I have these headaches that don't go away. The last time I took them, my blood-pressure got really high (bottom number in the high 90s where it is usually in the 70s), and I had really bad headaches. I got off them, and of course, gained the weight back. I decided to try it again, since I've been bingeing a lot lately, and have really been packing on the pounds. But, the headaches are back, and I know that my blood-pressure is up. I feel like someone is pressing out my eyes from the inside of my head. It really scares me, so I think I'm going to have to stop taking it. Is there any other drug out there that helps with binge-eating? (Maybe I need to post this on the eating disorder board, too.) I'm not morbidly obese, but I feel like I will be one day if I don't get a hold on this. I'm short (5 ft. 1), and all my weight goes below the waist - straight to my hips and thighs. 10 extra pounds on me is like 20 on a taller person. I just started taking Phentermine this past Sunday, and have already lost 4 pounds. All I need to lose is 10 or 12. Losing weight makes me feel soooo much better, but I'm scared, and don't know what to do. If I could just find something to help me keep control. That's all I need. I do work out, and I guess that's why I'm not more overweight than I am. But, I really need to get a hold on my problem. I have not told anyone. Not any doctors, or any family. I'm ashamed. No one has a clue. My husband knows how I love food, and he loves it too, but he doesn't know how I "lose control" sometimes. Can anyone help me? Thanks for listening, and sorry for the long post.

Beth Ann

Re: My experience with phentermine...

Beth Ann
I have experienced headaches with Phentermine as well. I am also a binge eater and I understand that part of it. I have taken Adipex, which is a brand name Phentermine based drug. And I did not get headaches on Adipex. I really don't understand the differences in the brand name vs generic, but I can say I have tried both more than once just to be sure. And every time I switch back to Phentermine I get the headaches. Unfortunately the Adipex is much more expensive. But for my binge eating it works good. It seems to work quickly and I can take it only when I need to & doesn't seem to bother my sleep as much. I have also tried every natural remedy out there and I saw an eating disorder specialist for a year. Though all that stuff made me a healthier person, nothing controlled the binges. Good luck to you and thank you for posting. I live a fairly isolated lifestyle right now and though I just joined today, I already feel far less isolated than I did an hour ago.
Take care~
Cindy

Re: My experience with phentermine...

Welcome to the boards, northwestnative! You will find lots of help and support here.

You know, the reason why I didn't post on the eating disorder board to begin with is because it seems like no one talks much about binge eating being an eating disorder. It seems like the only thing you hear about is anorexia and bulimia. I guess binge eating is too shameful to talk about. I don't know. But, anyway......guess what I found out today. I had a physical last week. And I've just started going to a new doctor. I've been feeling bad (tired mostly) for years and have had night sweats for over 7 years (and I'm only 37). So, I got my physical, and this doctor did an EKG on me. I've never had a doctor do one before, but he said that is standard procedure. He called today and said that all my bloodwork was normal, but the EKG wasn't. Now I'm scared. I'm not taking any more Phentermine. I took the old Phen-Fen combination for about two weeks many years ago, and I'm thinking that may be have damaged my heart. I'm really scared. I work the graveyard shift and have to take something to "stay awake and alert" sometimes, and now I'm scared to take anything. And I was really loving the Phentermine. I was wide awake on that stuff! I've got to try to use will power, I guess, to not binge. Now, all this is going to make me nervous, and will make me want to pig out! My doctor said it may be "nothing", but he wants me to see a cardiologist to be sure. I will keep you posted. Thank you for your post. You had me really wanting to try Adipex, but now I'm scared to take anything.

Re: My experience with phentermine...

Hi Beth...I'm sorry that you have had such a bad experience w/ phen. I have taken it since October of 04 and have lost 45 lbs. so far and going strong. (205 to 160)

A lot of people switch to Bontril when they have bad side effects w/ phen and have way less side effects and can take it successfully. If you decide to take another pres. diet med...you may want to try Bontril.

Much luck to you.

Re: My experience with phentermine...

Hi Beth
Did you find out anything else about the EKG? That is really scary. I have been thinking about eating disorder stuff a lot since the lady in Florida (oh my gosh my brain is failing I can't think of her name) Her electrolyte balance was off. Anyway, I would like to get this under control before I end up permanently damaging my body. I can tell you must be feeling similarly. One thing I remember learning from the eating disorder specialist 10 years ago-is that she said to approach binge eating as something that provided for a need. She said we cannot try to eliminate it completely as it has been there for us and helped us through troubled times. I thought this sounded strange but she said often if a person tries to eliminate it completely-it just gets worse. She recomended giving myself permission to binge when I really needed to but suggested I keep it to one or two foods. I chose airpopped popcorn with butter -as much as I wanted. And if I needed something sweet I chose something else. (It always seems my binges are from craving salty or sweet.) I am going to give this way of thinking renwed effort

I felt kind of bad thinking about my last post-try a different drug! But I find that offline no one really wants to talk about them in a practical sort of way. It's easy for someone who doesn't understand to say "I would never take a diet drug" or "just stop". But the reality is (for me anyway) ordering my rx for diet pills online came after struggling with this for years and years.

I will be thinking good thoughts for you & your EKG results. I hope everything is okay. And in the meantime I am seriously considering stopping taking these phentermine that I have -though I am not commited to that yet. But if you need a "trying to quit" buddy let me know. Take care~

Re: My experience with phentermine...

I am new to this board and would like your help. How did you lose 45 pounds on phentermine? I started taking the 37.5 version a week ago and have lost one pound. I did not have cravings last week but this week it is getting very hard to resist the cravings. Did you excercise while you were taking the phen? Thanks!

Re: My experience with phentermine...

PLease, all of you:
go see a counselor and now. Binge eating disorder IS a real eating disorder, and you aren't eating because you are hungry, but you are trying to fill some emotional void with food. A psychologist will help you figure out what's behind this disease and help you work through it so that you can be comfortable and not shameful or guilty after eating.
You don't need drugs to help you lose weight. You need help figuring out why you have to resort to these behaviors. Why you need to eat to feel satisfied.
You can do it!
Good luck.

Re: My experience with phentermine...

Well everyone, I got a good report from the heart doctor! But, I'm still not going to take any more phentermine. And, yes, superherogirl, I agree with you. I know that binge eating is something that "is in my head". I know it. Right now, I'm just too ashamed to go and talk to someone about it. I'm trying to deal with this my own way. Like, by asking myself "why" I want to pig out on something I don't really want. A friend of mine was telling me (without knowing about my problem) about a friend of hers who has lost around 100 pounds since the first of the year. She said that he is seeing a psychologist and a nutritionist- trying to get his head right, and also learn to eat right. I think a lot of people are emotional eaters, and I would love to see this problem addressed more.

Re: My experience with phentermine...

Glad to hear your heart is okay Beth! I agree with Superhero too, but I think we all know it is emotional eating (though also some believe to be triggered by nutritional imbalances). And figuring out what's behind it is only a small part. Through my eating disorder therapist I was able to verbalize the "whys" but implementing a plan and actually making it work and sticking with it is the hard part. Yes ideally we could all go to therapy but I don't think that's a reality for most people. Even though I'm an advocate for counseling there is no practical way I could go now. So I'm glad we are talking about it.
