It all depends on the trainer and what kind of workouts you want to do. I think you should try just one or two sessions first just to be sure you like the trainer and their methods.
Of course a good personal trainer is worth their weight in gold. IF you find a good one that motivates and gives you the results you want and if you have the money, keep them indefinitely!
But if your pockets are not unlimited then perhaps a compromise would be to book a couple of sessions get the trainer so they show you how to perform the exercises correctly and then get them to set a program for you and then go back in 10 weeks for a follow up session and a review of your performance. Aim for having a couple of sessions every 10 weeks or what cost will allow. Of course the more the better. But try and aim for having a trainer for at least a year. And if need be spread out those ten sessions over one year. That will keep you motivated more.
