Protein question

OK, forgive my ignorance here but I've been getting conflicting information. Here's my question; Are protein shakes supposed to help you gain weight or lose weight? I've heard people say that they drink protein shakes to bulk up and then I had someone tell me to drink a protein shake daily to help bust through a weight loss plateau. Can anyone clarify the use of protein shakes for me??? Thanks so much!

Re: Protein question

From my knowledge, protein shakes help build new muscle, so if your friends are drinking them to "bulk up" then they would be working out then taking the shakes before the sessions or before they go to bed. I think protein shakes tend to bloat your stomach a tad too therefore making you feel fuller so you don't eat as much aswell. I'm pretty sure they're a good thing to take maybe everynight before you hit the sack. Maybe someone could confirm this?

Re: Protein question

Protein shakes are to guarantee one is getting enough protein while dieting or doing heavy duty bodybuilding. Any excess protein over the body's needs needs will be burned as fuel in the presence of inadequate calories from other sources or stored as fat if enough calories are eaten.

They are NOT a weight loss aid; more a "muscle preservative"...although all weight loss programs will burn off SOME lean flesh. Dieters try to minimize that loss by making sure there is always some protein available when the body calls for it. And indeed it's necessary to provide some source of calories at all times. That's why dieters are often told to eat many tiny meals a day.

thats called a starvation diet. If you told a doctor that, they'd lock you up and force you food.

Protein promotes muscle-forming, so it means that you tone up adn lose weight because your fat gets converted into muscle, and it means taht your body metabolises fat quicker.
