Actually, that's not true. Water does help you lose fat, but in an indirect way. It has to do with the relationship between the kidneys and your liver. The kidneys are supposed to filter your blood while one of the functions of the liver is to burn fat. The problem is that the kidneys need water to function at their best. If you don't take in enough water throughout the day, the kidneys aren't as effective at filtering your blood. So what happens is that some of their workload is dumped onto the liver. But if the liver is busy helping the kidneys, it can't focus on one of its jobs, which is burning fat. So by drinking plenty of water, you'll help your kidneys do their job and therefore help your liver burn fat.
Plus, water is a great way to control your appetite. The next time you feel hungry, drink a glass of water and wait 10 minutes and then see if you still feel hungry. A lot of times, what we perceive as hunger is really just dehydration.
