question about exercising

is exercising three times a week for an hour doing cardio stuff like the elliptical enough to have any effect on weight loss and is it healthy enough in general?

yup and yup.

you need to combine it with a good diet...but Any Exercies will have an effect on weight loss end will contribute to health in general.

Exercise is good period. I have found that for me, in addition to a good work out, I also need to cut my calories to lose weight. The fact is, eating a zillion calories a day packed with fat & carbs, and then only exercising three times a week, you probably won't lose any weight (unless your matabolism is out of this world,,,,)
I try and eat 1,000 to 1,200 calories per day (I am a 43 yr old woman - men generally require more) and exercise 4 to 5 times a week. Also, the calories I do eat are a good balance of proteins and carbs. I have lost 23 pounds over the past 14 weeks and feel alot better than I used to.
The whole idea is to get moving! Whether it's walking, running, eliptical or whatever, as long as you don't have any medical issues that prevent you from exercising I say go for it. If you have medical problems, see your doctor before you start any kind of diet or exercise program. (geez,,,I sound like an infomercial!!!! )

I just started using an elipitcle trainer about 6 months ago...and I have lost around 40lbs... I feel great and I am going to continue using it...When I was at college last year I weighed in at around 255 at 6'0" and now im at 215...I am about to go back to college after my first CO-OP term and I'm looking for a gym buddy so I dont waste all the progress I've made...Just keep it up and you will notice the difference... I also started doing the elipticle at a 27 min program and I did 2.7 mile in that period, now im at a harder (more resistance) 30 min program and I did 3.7 miles in that time yesterday!!! it really feels good when you can see the progress you make!

Thanks for the responses - I have severe scoliosis so running is out of the question (it is PAINFUL for me to run) but the elliptical doesn't hurt me. Swimming is good too but I don't know where any spanish pools are (im studying here for the year.)

Could you perhaps give me sort of a sample day's meals that is 1000-1200 calories? I have never payed any attention to numbers because I'm too lazy (therein lies my problem.)

I have gained TWENTY POUNDS in the past TWO MONTHS!!! I haven't eaten particularly more than I ever ate before so I don't know why I suddenly look like a cow (I am 5'3" pushing 140 pounds...) I stopped taking birth control for awhile, perhaps that is related?
