I do this. (I believe it was Birdie who gave me the advice in the first place!)
I try to count by a week. This way, I don't feel bad on the weekends when i tend to splurge quite a bit. I'm very strict during the week, and on the weekends I still count calories, but let myself eat a lot more. I never thought this would work, but it does. I'm kind-of on maintenace, but I've still been LOSING a little weight eating this way. (And I upped my calories quite a bit to decrease the deficit I had during weight loss).
So yes, you CAN do it, as long as you try to stay as accurate as you can.
