Is my new food scale wrong?

After deciding to start counting calories, I got a food scale this afternoon. This morning I estimated how much 30g of oatmeal was (recommended serving size, 115 calories or so), then when I got my food scale I measured my estimation and was shocked. The amount I ate this morning, didn't do anything to the scale. I kept adding and adding to get to 30g and was surprised at how much it was. I ate 1/3 of a measuring cup for breakfast this morning, and to get the scale to 30g I had to add another 2/3's of the measuring cup plus another cup more or less.

Does this sound about right? or is my new scale not giving me the correct information? Wrong type of scale?

Re: Is my new food scale wrong?

Thirty grams is about an ounce...for oatmeal just a little less than a half cupful dry (which is 40 grams.)

Go into you pantry and find something like cookies. The nutrition list will say something like Serving Size 3 cookies and give the weight in grams...throw the three cookies (or whatever is the serving size) on your scale and see if you get the same weight.

edit: AHA, just thought of the easiest way. Weigh some U.S. pennies 1962 through 1982...they are almost EXACTLY 3 grams each.
And the newer ones: 2.5 grams each.

If you're RICH, dimes weigh 2.27 10 of them should weigh either 22 or 23 grams if your scale is a good one.
