Question about daily calorie intake and a diet.

Hello, i'm new to these boards.

my new years resolution was to quit drinking and loose some weight.
i'm 24 years old, 6ft 2, around 200lbs and have decent metabolism.
I normally watch my fat intake, rarely eat junk foods, rarely eat red meat, almost never eat fast
food. However, i was a very avid beer guy. drinking alot of heavy ales and stouts.
For the last few months or so of 2005, i kinda let myself go. I was unemployed, drinking 5-7 drinks per day. that coupled with lots of chineese food, and very little physical activity, made me gain about 15 pounds in maybe 3 months or so.
So new years day, I stopped drinking completely and decided to go on a diet.
only i did the stupid thing and didn't get any advise on dieting.
Instead, i just cut down my calorie and fat intake. I also walk/jog 4 miles or almost every day.
I've only been dieting for 8 days, and i think i lost at least 4 lbs. i've been told that is too fast.

I've been keeping strict track of my calorie intake daily.
its looking like this

1/3/07 - 1325 calories 18 grams of fat (4 mile walk)
1/4/07 - 1380-1400 calories 17.5-20 fat (4 mile walk)
1/5/07 - 1250 total 8.5 grams
1/6/07 - 1440 calories around 20 grams of fat (4 mile walk)
1/7/07 - 1545 calories (4 mile walk)
1/8/07 - 1255 cal
1/9/07 - 1395 cal 20g fat
1/10/07 - 1080 cal around 22 grams of fat (4 mile walk)
1/11/07 - 1100 cal 24 grams of fat (4 mile walk/jog)

i haven't exactly been starving myself. just eating 4 meals a day with low cal foods (tuna, salad, organic bean soups, fruit, veg, water, herbal tea, etc).
i was told that i'm eating too little in terms of my calorie intake, and that my metabolism will go down from eating like this.

i found this calorie calculator online
[removed]

it suggests for fat loss that i eat 2156 cal per day.
does that sound about right? have i hurt my metabolism with 8 days of calories counts this low? Any recomendations to what i should do to keep my metabolism high, and loose weight at a healthy pace?

Re: Question about daily calorie intake and a diet.

it is a little low for a male.
as a rule of thumb, find your daily basic caloric intake number, (maintance) thats eatting a certain amount of calories and your not loseing or gaining...thats your daily cloirie count for maintance.

well the rule of thumb I use for loseing...drop that number by 500...if your daily count is 2200 for daily mantance.. then to lose weight you would need to consume 1800 daily calories...be precise on the counting of calories.
exercise /walking 4 miles a day sure thats helps a lot..I walk about that much daily also on a treadmill.

Re: Question about daily calorie intake and a diet.

I also feel that your average for the last nine days (1308 to be precise ) is too low for a 6'2" 24 year old male.

I would keep around 1800 for really fast weight loss and around 2100 for slightly slower losses.
I think your break-even point is likely around 2500-3000 calories/day...especially with those 4 mile walks (about 400 calories.)

I think 1800 calories will give you much more than a pound a week...don't go below this amount on any day.

I don't think 9 days of super low-cal did TOO much damage to your metabolism.
