Hi all, new to this board, warning about otc weight loss suppliments from md

Hi everyone,

I hope that no one gets upset with me, I just had an appt w/my pcp. I need to loose a lot of weight. I thought about gbp, went to meeting and would love to do it. Dh and mom are dead set against it. Insurance said I had to do 6 mo MD supervised diet before they would pay. I asked MD about otc diet weight loss meds and suppliments. She said stay away from all of them, Houdia, mua hung, and a list too long for me to remember. She said she has already hospitalized 3 people this year for heart issues just from houdia. I am by no means telling anyone what to do, I just think that there are other healthier ways to go about loosing weight. She is sending me to a Medical Weight Loss MD. They do a total work up of yours and family's history, ekg, labs etc. They put you on diet best for you, you go back every two weeks for B12 shot, which helps with water retention and really boosts energy. My insurance does not cover it, but requires it in order to pay for gbp. They told me that avarage weight loss is 16 to 20 lbs a month. If this works for me, I won't need gbp. It isn't cheap. I joined LA last year, in two months I lost 22lbs and then went up and down 3-4 lbs 3rd month, not changing anything I was doing. That plan cost me about 2200.00. I did get refund for not used months. Md supervised will end up being about 875.00 if I figured correctly for 6 mos. It is safer because of MD supervision than otc meds. which if you add up all you have spent on diet books and otc meds, probably isn't out of line. I think I own every diet book ever written. I know how desparate people are to loose weight. I absolutely hate my body and have very low self esteem. I do not wish to hear of anyone on here getting very sick or seriously damaged from otc weight loss supliments. I encourage you all to check it out. I am a regular poster on the back pain boards as I've recently had back surgery. I will also be a regular poster on the quit smoking boards in about a week. Please, no one hate me, I just care that people loose weight safely and if you can't do it on your own, like me, you at least owe it to yourself to check it out. Just a thought. Usta

Hello usta, there you are I was starting to wonder where doing. I agree with you about the otc pills, I guess it is so tempting. I start my diet today, nothing spectacular, but protien shakes and fruit am and noon, and lean cuisine and salad for dinner. I hope this works, please pray for me and I am going to walk today even if it kills me. Usta I wish you luck with your diet and honey smile, I know how that self esteem thing can get, believe me I am there with you. But I want you to keep your head up and realize how beautiful you are regardless of your weight. Please take care, and also are you on the other site, I wanted to add you to my buddy list on there. Good luck with the smoking cessation, I know you can do it!!!
Rachel

Thank you for your experience. I know all to well about the Hoodia and other diet pills. Are you planning on starting an exercise routine to help with the weight loss. You can start by walking around your neighborhood.

I totally agree with the health risks associated with OTC weight loss pills, but, with all due respect to your doctor, prescription weight loss pills don't have a gleaming rap sheet, either. And I speak as someone who was prescribed Fen-Phen by my family doctor ten years ago and will have to have my heart monitored for the rest of my life because of that stupid weight loss pill.

Weight loss aids -- particularly pills -- seem to be the golden ticket nowadays. And everyone is jumping on the bandwagon, big Pharma included, to make as much profit as possible.

Please be cautious of prescription weight loss aids, as well as OTC.

Re: Hi all, new to this board, warning about otc weight loss suppliments from md

Stenolady,

I am going to be seeing a bariatric diet specialist. From what I gather, he will do a total work up of personal and family history, lab work and an ekg. He will get or measure bmi, He will put me on appitite supressant, fat blocker and I will get B12 shots every two weeks to help with water retention and boost energy. I just had discectomy four weeks ago so I start PT today. I will begin walking as soon as they allow me. I had a lot of nerve issues post surgery that affected my right leg. It has setteled down a lot, but not enough to start a strenuous walking program. I am sorry about the problems you encountered with the fen phen. I work for a large cardiologist group and we have done many echos on fen phen patients because of heart damage. Thanks for the warning, I will be asking a lot of questions about anything he prescribes for me and it's safety record. Usta
