losing fat with excersise

i'm a little confused about this. i've heard that you have to burn off more than you consume in a day, so if you consume 1200 cals a day that means you have to burn off that and more? surely that would mean being at the gym half the day. I only have time to walk excersise once a day.

However I work 9 hours a day and my job involves walking around most of the day. I work in a clothes shop so i'm back and foward replenishing stock alot. how many cals would that approx burn off in a day?

I weigh 123lb

Most of your calories are spent just keeping your body alive. It's called your basal metabolic rate. <removed>

You can look up "basal metabolic rate" online. Some sites let you enter your height, weight, etc. and then calculate your BMR. Once you know this you can figure out how many calories you need to cut from your regular diet to lose weight.

For example, my BMR is currently 1,218.2. This is the amount of calories my body would burn if I laid in bed all day and did nothing. If I walk around at work, go to the gym, etc. I'd burn more.
