Unhappy Confused

Hi all wonder if anyone can help, I am so confused and miserable.
How many calories do I need to lose weight?, I have had lots of conflicting advice on how many I should have, I dont want to lose weight rapidly but a sensible loss.
I am 54, 5.1 and 10st, I feel so unhappy I can see another coming and me being wrapped up in sweat shirts feeling hot and sticky and a pain to be around.
I dont want to go out let alone go on holiday, it feels like its invading all areas in my life.
I work in a busy outpatients clinic and spend 90% of my time running/walking around my clinic and the building as a whole, exercise outside of work is zero I feel constantly tired(no health problems to cause tiredness), and I know I am making my hubbys life a misery with it.
I started to do my family tree and have just gotten back in touch with my family and as a consequence have been invited to my nieces wedding in September and I dont want to turn up as a blob and I dont want them to be dissapointed with me, a bit shallow I know but that how I feel.
I would appreciated sensible advice because I am so confused about it all

Thanks Polly

Re: Confused

Polly, I am no expert but I struggle as well with losing weight so I can relate to you a few things I have learned. I once went on a diet and lost 100 lbs by eating only 800 calories per day. That is not healthy and I will not do that again.
It's my understanding that you need to eat at least 1000 or 1200 calories per day depending on your weight at the time. I don't know what you weigh, but you should eat 1200 or maybe even 1400 to start off with to avoid extreme hunger if you are quite a lot overweight.
Here is just a suggetion. Write down ALL that you eat for one week and then see how many calories on average you usually eat per day without dieting (not indulging either, just your normal eating habits). It takes 3500 calories to make one lb loss of weight. So if you eat 500 calories less per day than you normally eat, you will lose 1 lb that week. According to how much you want to lose per week, adjust you calorie intake to comply with that format.
Be sure and drink plenty of water, eat some good fats (like olive oil in your salad dressings) as they keep the hunger down. Eat lots of veggies (I steam them with no butter) A good tip is to get the GOYA Ham flavored concentrate. It is like a powdered boulleon like chicken boulleon we normally see, in the seasoning section. I dilute it and pour it over my veggies like green beans, etc and it is delicious without any fat. Also, I use chicken broth (no fat canned) to cook my rice or to make Stove Top dressing and then I don't have to use any oleo or fat.
I only weigh once a week on and that keeps me from getting discouraged. I am also diabetic which makes it much harder, but I just keep on trucking. My problem is that when I cut down on my calories, I sometimes wake up in the middle of the night with my sugar so low that I have to beat a path to the fridge and feed my face! Very hard to lost that way.
I hope some of this helps and that you have faith in the Lord to help you as well. We are sometimes too weak to do it on our own...
Best of wishes, CAINAN3
