so desperate

I am 17 years old and desperate to lose weight.
I'm 5'5" and 180 pounds.
I spent high school being fat, and I'm going to college in the fall. I don't want to go through another 4 years of being fat. I couldn't take it.
I have had a boyfriend for 3 years and my insecurity has really affected the relationship.
Anyones advice or words of encouragement would be greatly appreciated.

Re: so desperate

Hi pixiedust! First off, the first thing you should do is see your Dr. I'm 36 yrs old and have spent 30 of those years being fat. I did EVERYTHING and nothing worked. I'm not a big eater, and get a fair amount of exercise, but I just kept gaining. I was actually considering weight loss surgery when my dr. told me to see an endocrinologist (hormone/metabolism dr) 1st. I did, and to make a long story short, he diagnosed my problem immediately and put me on medication. It's only been 2 weeks and I'm losing already. My 13 year old daughter also has a weight problem, so I'm having her tested. How are your parents? My specific problem is genetic, so it's passed down. So please, see your dr. for some blood work. Also, keep in mind, your state of mind has a lot to do with it. If you're like me, you get depressed cause of your size, so you eat to quell that depression. It's just a big vicious cycle. I hate to exercise, but I always found 1/3 hour of Richard Simmons made me feel so good afterward, that I'd be able to stick to a diet all day. (in other words, if you can exercise, do it in the a.m., so the self-esteem lasts thru the day) It may sound hookie, but it really does work! Good luck! If you need some support, please feel free to e-mail me. twohucs2@msn.com Take care and see a Dr.!! Cindy
