Is a woman who's 5'4" and 145 lbs. fat?

I personally don't think a woman of that height and weight qualifies as being fat. I'd call that average. But the government doesn't seem to agree.
[This message has been edited by moderator2 (edited 07-27-2002).]

I would say that a woman 5'4" tall and 145# is about 20-25 pounds overweight unless she has significant muscle mass from working out.

A good rule of thumb is for a woman 5'0" tall figure 100# normal weight and add 5# for every inch over 5'0". For a man that is 5'0" tall figure 106# and add 6# for every inch over 5'0". These figures do not take into consideration abnormally low or high amounts of muscle mass.

Re: Is a woman who's 5'4" and 145 lbs. fat?

Well, if that's so, then I guess I'm just a fat cow! I'm 5 ft. 1 in, and I weigh 125. I do think I am about 10 lbs overweight, and am in the process of TRYING to lose it....but, for me, 105 is impossible for me Arkie. I got down to 105 one time (went through a divorce), and I looked sick. My ribs were showing. I may weigh 125, but I would not say I'm "fat". In fact, I am very proportioned, and all my guy friends tell me I don't need to be dieting. I would much rather look like Jennifer Lopez than Calista Flockhart (no offense, Calista ). That's just my opinion. Also, I subscribe to Oxygen magazine, which is a fitness magazine for women. There are always women in there that compete, and the short ones are usually around 115 lbs. while competing, and around 125 when they aren't competing. And those women look great at both weights.

No--I don't think taht a person that size would be fat--- I myself am 5'4" and about 165--I am shooting for 140--- I know I will look pretty darn good at that weight-- I guess it depends on the body type--- People can't believe I weigh what I do--they don't think I look "FAT" at all-- I would say I have a medium frame--- -- And I don't think a person is 20-25 lbs. overweight at that --145--- GOOD LUCK ALL!

I'm 5'2, 135lbs with a good muscle mass. I take a size 9. I don't think I'm obese or anything. If anyone wants to judge that for themselves, i got pics...heh

Re: Is a woman who's 5'4" and 145 lbs. fat?

5'4 at 145 seems very healthy tp me, and of course it depends on the frame of that person.

I am 5'0" weighing 118 lbs (goal is 113). I wear a size 2. Now according to Arkie, I am overweight, and honestly.. has anyone ever seen a woman wearing a size 2 overweight??? Highly doubtful.

Besides if I were 100 lbs.. I would look nasty, I would have to lose my muscle.. then be skin and bone.. who likes to snuggle up to a pile of bones anyway?

Re: Is a woman who's 5'4" and 145 lbs. fat?

The reason I started this thread is to point out that the government itself is contributing to the dieting craze and thereby fueling the $50 billion weight loss industry. According to their classifications, a woman who's 5'4" and 145 pounds is considered fat. I know the government is out of touch with the real world, but where did they ever come with this standard? This is how they get away with saying this nation has an obesity crisis. For a government that claims to be concerned with the health of Americans, they need to do a little homework on what obesity is and maybe they'll realize just how flawed their reasoning is. I read an article when they released their report and according to the charts they're using, Tom Cruise is considered overweight. It's bad enough the media puts pressure on people to look thin, but when the government joins, something is seriously wrong. I wonder if the weight loss industry has more lobbyists than other industries cause this is a perfect example of special interests and campaign donations at work.

Re: Is a woman who's 5'4" and 145 lbs. fat?

I totally agree. I don't think that 5'4" at 145 is overweight at all. And if you were 5'4" and 25 pounds less that would make you 120. I know that when I weigh that much I look sick and everyone thinks my eating disorder is back. Even at 125.

But I know what you mean. At 5'5" you're suppose to weigh 125. I've heard that all my life. Not a realistic goal for myself without starving and purging etc...

According to the NIH (National Institute of Health) a woman who is 5'4" and 145 lbs.is not overweight.

Re: Is a woman who's 5'4" and 145 lbs. fat?

Since when is the government of one mind? I don't remember which department said that 5'4" and 145 was overweight, but I know this was big news a few years back. They were studies released by the federal government. Sad when the government can't agree with itself.

Re: Is a woman who's 5'4" and 145 lbs. fat?

I knew a personal trainer who was 5'4 and weighed 154, but she looked liked she weighed 115 lbs. - the ladies were all telling her they want to be her weight & she would tell them how much she weighed & they were shocked.
I guess the gov't doesn't take in consideration for muscle mass.

That would mean at 5'10" I should weigh 150 and that would be fat!

Re: Is a woman who's 5'4" and 145 lbs. fat?

VegasGirl, I was once involved with a woman who was 5'5" and 150 pounds. While she was by no means skinny, I did not consider her fat.
