Protein bars/shakes

I joined a fitness center not too long ago. As part of the weightloss program, I was given a starter package of meal replacement protein shakes and low-fat protein bars. I'm not a fan of either. The shakes are like drinking flavored chalk and the bars taste like flavored cardboard. The problem is that I now have really bad gas, bloating, and diarreha (sp?). I noticed that they both contain soy protein. I remember when I tried the atkins diet for a time, I had the same problem when I had the atkins protein bars which also tasted like flavored cardboard. (I quit the atkins diet because I couldn't stand it.) I don't plan on getting anymore after these are finished. I'd rather snack on fruits and vegetables and have sensible meals. Has anyone else had problems with the protein things? I'm tired of running to the bathroom. It's bad enough since I'm drinking a lot of water. I don't need the added discomfort. Anyway, just curious. Thanks!

Those protein bars gave me gas, not diarrhea though

I am on a high-protein, low-carb diet. I went through a phase where I did the shakes and bars - but missed "real food". I keep a box of Carb Solutions bars spread around - in case I'm in a crunch and can't eat a "real meal" - at least I can have something and not resort to blowing my diet. When you haven't had sugar or chocolate in eons, they don't taste too bad.

Let me reiterate. I am NOT on a low carb diet. I am just following a balanced diet with less calories, sugar, and fat. It's nothing special. I hated being on the low carb diet because I've been vegetarian for years. A couple years ago I went back to eating meat, but even then I only eat chicken and fish and that can get old if that's all I eat. I'm a sucker for fresh produce. I do know that vegetables, legumes, and grains can give me gas which is why I use beano which helps a lot. It's these damn protein meal replacement shakes and snack bars the gym gave me that are giving me the trots suddenly. Today I didn't partake of any, and I'm happy to report that everything is back to normal functioning. I realize it's just an promotion/offer that gets me to buy their stuff at the gym. Anyway, thanks for responding, I appreciate it.
