Hi...I lost about 60 pounds recently, and the weight came off very quickly. Then I went on the pill in October and since then I have only lost about 6 pounds. That brand(marvelon) made me extremely hungry, and so i switched recently to Alesse. My problem now is that I am gaining weight. I want to go off the pill, for a little while and see if the weight will come of as easily as before, and then go back on. My question is...how long do I have to stay off it once I do? Can I go back on in a couple months?

The spike in appetite is only temporary. Most of the side effects should subside in 2-3 months. If they don't, then you should switch. Until then, you just have to tuff it out. The same thing happened to me, appetite-wize, and it went away after a couple weeks. I maybe gained 2 lbs if at all. The most important thing is to not over-eat.

Talk to your doctor - hopefully it's a gyn that's handling your BC pills. Some BC pills (especially with higher estrogen levels) encourage weight gain more than others. It's not a biggie to switch brands - your doc should be able to do this - call in and speak to his/her nurse - they are usually a great help!

Side note about BC pills I learned earlier this week - it is essential that you take them at the EXACT time every day - even an hour or two late can diminish it's effectiveness! I usually take my pill around 8:30am, I forgot it one morning last week, took it around 11am, by that evening, I was spotting! Told my doc about it and we had a long discussion about taking the pills at the exact time daily otherwise you can end up preggers!! YIKES!
