I've been a lurker here for quite some time and have some great tips for everyone and Id like to share my experiences with you all.
I am 19 years old and have been about 30-40 pounds overweight for 3-4 years. I started binge eating daily to cope with the stresses of life (school college, relationships, work) and went to Taco Bell everyday after school for years. I'm actually a vegeterian, but I got beans in my Tacos rather than meat and trust me - it added up. I binged on food daily to cope with emotional stress and to fill voids in my life.
I had tried dieting when I met my current girlfriend 3 years back. I tried it all. I am a internet expert and I have researched EVERYTHING on weight loss.
So I started jogging. It worked great, felt great. I limited my calories daily, and ate very small amounts of food. I still occasionaly binged but as the month (this was in summer) moved on, I was able to really develop self control. I lost almost 20 pounds Id have to say in a little over a month. I was pleased. Then something occured that I regret to this day. Let me remind you all, I wasn't on supplements or anything, I just restricted calories and excerised a LOT. I decided when my g/f was away to try this "fasting". I had heard a lot of good testimonails how it helps cleanse the body and everything. So i tried it, because at that point I had developed an incredible amount of self control. I fasted for 4 days. Those were the hardest 4 days of my life. All i drank was water. Dizziness, weakness and severe apathy followed. By day 4, all I could think about was binging and eating. That night, i went out in my car to my local pizza place and had to binge. I got a huge pizza and also got tons of stuff at the sotre (more stuff that i could eat by far $100 worth of stuff)
I started eating and then not surpisingly, puked it all. My body couldnt handle adjusting to food that quickly after not for 4 days.
From that point on in my life, all I hae is gained weight.
Tip # 1 - Do not fast. Your body will slow metabolism and you will lose muslce and utilimately fail and go into starvation mode and become fatter.
This was my first mistake. I was doing well up to that point. After that i tried on and off to lose weight the normal way, but i couldnt - and i contribute it to the fasting/binge cycle.
Since then, I have binged on and off for the past year and 1/2. I gained all the weight I lost back and even more. i weight 130, now i weight 180. The most i have ever wiehged.
Its now the summer, my girlfriend is away on vacation again for a month, and I started something. I am now takign Xenadrine Rf-1. I always was oppsed to ephedra or any drugs, but i needed something to aid me. And it has. I have less food cravings, and much more energy. I am losing weight successfully, and faily healhty drinking plenty of water and eating well.
I know that epedra has risks, a lot of which are overrated, but some are not. Dont over do it, take breaks from it and dont depend on it alone.
I reccommned this protudct to anyone who is thinking about it. It does work. If you have prexisitng conditions, dont though.
I am sorry this is so long and bad grammer but I hate writing but I just wanted to share my stories cause i bet a lot of you have similar positions.
Doing it the fast easy way wont work. It takes time, and of course i knew this back them, but became so obbessive as i had seen results. I wish i just kept up the normalness and didnt fast. Now I am on track again. I am going to update my progress weekly if anyone cares.
I am glad you are on the right track again. I can't believe you could go for 4 days with only water. That had to be real hard. I could never do it. I did for 2 days once though. I wanted to try the protein drink fast but I am not sure I could do it for 2 whole weeks.
Andrea, have you ever done this protein fast for 2 weeks? I had a protein drink once and it was gross. It was powder that u had to add water to. Came in a huge tub. Forgot the name of it though. Is there any already made cans that are real popular and easy to find that u recommend? That way I could just substitute one can per each meal.
i do do it but cant last 2 weeks. i know what ya mean bout the grossness b/c ive been there. ive never seen a whey powder i liked. as far as canned stuff, i only am familiar with slim fast- which has way too many carbs and sugar but look and see whats out there, maybe there is something useable. in the mean time, if you dont mind (good tasting) powder, look into twinlab twinfast and carbolite egg white powder. thats what i drink.
Milk makes them taste better, but milk has carbs in it.........so it depends on what your dieting goals are.
I find chocolate optimum nutrition whey drinks pretty ok in water, better than most. A friend said that their mint chocolate one is good too. I have to buy some of that when this 10 pound sack I just got runs out (I always feel weird buying a 10 pound sack of anything <IMG SRC="http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/wink.gif"> ...) cause I love mint n chip ice cream.
always stay away from strawberry flavor of any brand, I have tried a bunch of them, and unless they are filled with carbs.....they are not great.
if your pocket book allows, there is a brand called isopure or isoclear or something to that effect (the name eludes me right now)....they come in a clear bottle and is colored........looks like kool aid or something similar. It is carb free, and tastes great, but they are around 3 bucks for a bottle with 50g.
also, yeah.........I guess I didn't read through the thread as well as I should have. If you are doing a protein fast, I would stay away from whey. It is very fast to absorb into your body. I only use it post workout pure, for my other drink I put a cup of milk, and a spoonfull of peanut butter, flax, or take a couple fish oil tablets before taking. The fat will help the protein break down slower.
I would, like a previous poster said, use egg powder, casein, or a whey/casein mixture, if you are doing a protein fast.
HOw about soy protein shakes? would that work ok? That is all I have available right now and I do not really want to buy anything else until it is gone. I would only do the diet for 3 days. How many shakes should I have a day?
