Yeast Infection but no HMO - Women's Health Message Board

Hi all. I was on antibiotics last week and of course developed a yeast infection. Alot of itching and flaking and cm...anyways...I don't have any med coverage at the moment. Do the OTC creams work to cure it? Or just help with the symptoms? I don't want it interferring with my love life among other things. Any suggestions?

There are several over the counter remedies that do work. Monistat used to only be by prescription but is now over the counter and works pretty well. I have found the best to use the seven day treatment and you just put the suppository in once at night before going to sleep. It works, they also have a cream included in the pack for external itching! They are miserable to have but after a few days you should be feeling better. They run around 10-15 dollars I think although its been a while since I have had to buy any...thank god!! Any good one is gynolotrimin although I think it is a bit more expensive. Good luck...definately try or ask the pharmacist for some help with picking one. The over the counter ones do work!

You can get a one day monistat pill from your pharmacist. YOu have to go and ask for it though. Sometime they dont have it and have to order it. Also on the shelves there is what the previous poster mentioned, monistat, id get the three day dose. It does work. If you did have insurance a great one dose pill id Diflucan.
I also bought pure (not concentrated) cranberry juice, it also had grape seed extract in it. I had a glass with each antibiotic. I also bought one particular kind of yogurt , it had acidopholus as well as three other active live cultures. It spared me a nasty yeast from penicillin (mega doses) due to wisdom tooth infection.

Thanks ladies! I know that Diflucan works wonders. I get these everytime I take Antibiotics, so I would get the Diflucan filled at the same time as my antibiotic prescription! I will keep the cranberry juice in mind for the next time. But I will be headed off to the drugstore tomorrow. (After Hurricane Isabel goes bye byes)I will talk to the pharmacist about the Monistat pill. Does that have any side effects? Most likely I will get the cream. Thanks for the advice!!

Any time you take antibiotics you must always be sure to eat plenty of yogurt with live active cultures or take acidophillis capsules to help prevent a yeast infection. It is actually a good idea to this on a normal daily basis even when you are not on antibiotics. Since you are not sure if this is a yeast infection you best bet is to see the doc and get it cultured so you know for sure what is going on.
