Unhappy Anyone know anything about Lichen Sclerosis?

People on these boards must be getting sick of me by now.. first I posted because I was worried about herpes, then when I had been to my doctor she didn't think it was herpes but was concerned about skin cancer in my vagina, and now I've been looking up a lot of stuff on the internet and I'm curious about the skin problem called Lichen Sclerosis. I'm just wondering if anyone here knows much about it, and if so do you think it could be what I'm suffering from?

For the past 6 months I had what I thought was a severe yeast infection that just wasn't going away. I was constantly itchy and uncomfortable, it was terrible. After a few months I noticed that I was getting what felt like tiny cuts in my vagina, this would be when I was showering or when I had wiped after using the toilet. These were really painful and now seem to occur every few days. These cuts are what made me worry about herpes, I didn't have any blisters or anything, but you know what it's like when you're paranoid, you think you have every disease under the sun!

So I went to the doctors and she did HSV tests and while I was there I mentioned that I had noticed white patches on my vagina. It wasn't like the patches that you get on top of the skin when you have thrush, but it was in the skin.. if you get what I mean. Once I saw them I realised that the itching and pain that I'd been feeling were located at those two areas and that's also where the cuts/tears seem to occur.

My doctor was worried and said it looked like skin cancer and wants me to go back in a few weeks to be checked. Obviously I've been worrying a fair bit and have been doing a lot of research which is when I came across Lichen Sclerosis. From what I've read my symptoms seem to match the symptoms of this problem exactly. The only other problem I've had that I haven't seen noted on sites about LS is swollen lymph nodes in my groin. I had one about 2 months ago on the right side which caused a lot of aching and pain, now I have another one on the left side.

Now if anyone has actually bothered reading this far, and good on you if you have!, what do you think? How common is Lichen Sclerosis? And do you think my symptoms match it? I want to go back to the doctor asap, but unfortunately I've had a lot of bleeding lately. I missed one contraceptive pill about a week ago, and ever since I've bled for a day, had a day of nothing and then it's come back. It's driving me crazy. I wasn't sure if the doctor could really do anything if I was bleeding this much so I thought I'd wait until the end of my next period (the end of next week). The whole itching and pain is just becoming too much to handle at the moment, it's just horrible and I want some relief.

Thank you in advance to anyone who may be able to give me some ideas about this.

Re: Anyone know anything about Lichen Sclerosis?

I have been doing a lot of research also. I have cuts, razor type/paper cuts on my labia in the folds of the skin, just lines where the skin is broken and sometimes I get them around the anus in the perineum area. If this is herpes it is not the typical OB's, the circular clusters that bubble up and burst, I just get these cuts all the time. I have seen pictures of lichen sclerosis and I do not think that is what I have however possibly it is, mild or something. Another person had the same symptoms and they took diflucan which cleared it up and also estrace cream which rebuilds the tissue. I am going to try that and hope to god that does it for me also. I noticed nobody is posting or responding to my post regarding lichen sclerosis either. Does that mean people just don't know what to do or don't care or both?

Re: Anyone know anything about Lichen Sclerosis?

I don't know much about Lichen Schlerosis, so I haven't posted, but I also have these papercut like things. I have HSV2 but my dr told me it is more related to the recurrent yeast infections then to herpes.

Thank you KAESLE for your input

Thank you kindly KAESLE for your input, it is greatly appreciated since not many people respond or post regarding these paper cuts, razor type line cuts in the folds of the labia. Hopefuly this is related to yeast infections and not herpes as you stated. I am waiting for some diflucan to try and possibly estrace cream, both which has helped/WORKED for another person on this board. I will be elated if diflucan takes care of it because I do not get the regular/norm OBs of the clusters that blister over, etc. Thanks again.

Re: Anyone know anything about Lichen Sclerosis?

Hi, I was typing in my symptoms and lichen sclerosis popped up. I'm going to see my doctor in December and ask her about it. I also have all the symptoms. Does yours always hurt and burn or does it come and go? I thought I had a yeast and took 3 differerent meds and it didn't work. I even thought herpes but I don't get blisters or anything, I do have a little lump on the side of the vulva, but it just stays the same. The itching and burning also goes toward the anus. It also hurts when I have a bowel movement, does it hurt you? Sometimes it feels like the skin all around the vulva is ripping and cracking open. The burning and itching drives me nuts but it's worse during my monthly visitor.

Re: Anyone know anything about Lichen Sclerosis?

I have the same paper cut like symptoms! When I read your posts, I was so surprised to learn that I am not alone! I still think it could be herpes and I even got tested for that. I am positive to HSV1 and negative to HSV2. I never had a cold sore in my life. I could have type one genitally, but since genital HSV1 only recurs on average once every two years, my symptoms happen more than that.

I have itchiness/soreness/burning and paper cuts down there. The cuts can happen anything from the clitoris to above the anus and making bowel movement painful. My doc also thought it could be precancerous condition of the genital skin. However, my biopsy came back and showed only chronic inflammation and no evidence of precancerous condition. My viral culture on the paper cuts came back negative for HSV1.

I am also on the pill and have a lot of yeast. However, I really don't think a bad yeast infection can cause cuts down there. I seem to think the pills may have some connection because when I am on the pill, the symptoms appear. However, my symptoms are more episodic. They occur and go away on its own.

I researched about LS, but I don't have white patches. Also, my biopsy said the inflammation I have is uncharateristic of LS. So, LS is probably ruled out. Either that or I have a very mild form of LS. I don't know. I know your post is old (2003), if you still check this board, please write again and let us know if you've found out the cause of your symptoms or ways to remedy your symptoms. Thanks!

Re: Anyone know anything about Lichen Sclerosis?

GRRR! I have LS and it has caused chronic yeast infections 2. But I have found releif after 7 years. I tried a good brand of colloidal silver which took care of the yeast problem-but was also kind of expensive. Now I put a couple drops of Peroxide in my glass of water and drink it.(No more than 2-4 drops) This adds oxygen to the water. And a well oxygenated area can not grow fungus or bacteria. I do this 2-3 times a day. And my God it works! Keeps the yeast away. I can have sex but when I do I still get sore and a little tearing tho. So I still have LS or whatever this evil thing is. But as long as I do my peroxide in my water I don't have to suffer from constant yeast. Also 2day I saw a new gyno. I had to see a gyno to get my birth control pills. Even tho I gave up trying to find a doctor who knew what the heck was wrong with me. I told him that my dermatologist told me I had LS. Even tho a previous biopsy from another gyno came back negative for anything! GRR! Anyway this new doc 2day did the swab test and didnt find any sign of yeast. I told him of course-becuz oh how the peroxide in my water prevents any yeast overgrowth. So they r going to examine the wab sample over the next few days to see if my cells produce any yeast. So I'll see what this doctor says. Anyway I basicly gave up going to see doctors about my problem. But I had to go 2day 2 get more birth control pills. So I wanted to share this with people to see if using a couple drops of hydrogen peroxide in their water glasses-(a couple times a day) would help. But Do not use more than 1/8 tsp -ingesting too much peroxide can cause stomache upset!! Anyway-I can even eat pizza now and stay yeast free as long as I do this.

i was diagnosed with lichen schlerosis nearly a year ago. it is a thining of the tissue around the vagina and only affects women, I was given a steroid based cream which i had to use every other day for a week then slowly work down to once a week, steroid cream has to be used sparingly and not to often as it can also cause thining of the skin if used to much. I have to be checked every six months as its believed that you are more prone to cervical cancer. I was sent to a STD clinic as it was thought that i had herpes and that was where i was diagnosed they then refered me to a specialist has i also suffer with itching, soreness and small splits and tears and also now have the white patches but these took quite a few years to show up.

Re: Anyone know anything about Lichen Sclerosis?

I have suffered with lichens for a few years now and I find it to be progressive and poorly responsive to the steroid creams. It seems to have really gotten bad since I entered menopause. The simple act of urination or having a bowel movement is a painful and bloody experience. The most unfortunate thing is that I know I will never be able to have sex again!! If anyone has any advice, I would surely welcome it...thanks
