period

Hi! My "monthy" period is rather strange, and I am wondering if anything is going on. Ever since it first started, it has been really irregular. I never knew when it would come, though it was usually longer than one month. But this last March, something changed, and now it is REALLY regular, and every three weeks! Any idea what that means?

Re: period

Does this mean that you have three weeks without bleeding and then you start bleeding in the fourth week? If so, you have become very regular - this is a good thing. That is the exact pattern you want to have. If your bleeding comes two weeks after you stop bleeding and the whole cycle lasts three weeks, your cycle is a little short and you should see a doctor. If you bleed too often or too much, you can become anemic and life will be no fun at all.

You didn't say how old you are. Typically, young women start with very irregular periods in their early teens. After a few years, the real cycle will emerge and should stay that way unless something goes wrong.

Sorry I can't answer more specifically. Just to clarify four weeks total is a perfect cycle. Less than three weeks total is a little on the short side. It can be normal, but may not be very good for your body.

Re: period

Hi!
Thanks for the quick reply! I did know that four weeks is a perfect cycle, but my whole cycle is now three weeks (two weeks a month off and two on!). Do you really think that I need to see a doctor? What would they do? I do feel perfectly health.
I am 20 years old. My period started when I was 13, and has been irregular ever since. I had expected it it get regular sooner than now. Would the timing of all this have anything to do with emotional occurences?

Re: period

Yes, emotions can really play with your cycle. Stress hormones can do all kinds of bad things to your body. One of them is changing the date, length, and amount of your period. I bleed all the time as you may have read and I can feel the flow increase when I am angry or irritated. As you can imagine, this has resulted in a lot of blood loss!

Have you ever seen a gynecologist? It wouldn't hurt you to discuss your irregular cycles with one. You can do it with a regular doc, but it is very nice to have a relationship with a gyn in case you ever need one. A 21 day cycle is pretty short. I believe they usually say normal is between 24 and 38 days or something like that. A shorter cycle means you will lose more blood than other women. Many women live their entire reproductive lives in a near-anemic state. Bleeding more often is bound to lead to mild anemia. I can tell you that anemia is no fun at all. If nothing else, make sure you get a multi-vitamin everyday.

The first thing they would recommend after a pap smear and a basic exam would be birth control pills. This would make things very predictable for you and there are plenty of health benefits. There are also risks, of course. It really wouldn't hurt to discuss it all with a doc.

Re: period

Thank you for all the info. I will look into this more. I'm not much into seeing doctors, but was actually thinking about going in fairly soon (but I will NOT take birth control!!). I didn't realize that this can lead to anemia.

The reason I asked about the emotions was because my period suddenly took on this regular cycle when some new emotions where greatly awakened, and life became more stressful.

Thanks again! Oh, and by the way, I to take my vitamins.
