Pap Smear/STD Testing

When you get a pelvic exam done for STD testing, do they check for the same things as a pap smear? I've had both done in the past and it seems like the same procedure. My most recent test was an STD test in which they tested for chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis and the doctor said everything seemed normal. Since they do a close examination of your vagina and the fluids inside, wouldn't they tell me if I had a yeast infection also, even though it is not what they are looking for?

I'm just wondering because I have noticed a discharge and odor from my vagina that I never had when I first started having sex. I am wondering if this could be due to all the vaginal and semen fluids involved in the act and if it could produce more discharge and odor than in girls who are not sexually active. If anything was unusual about my odor or discharge, would the doctor who tested me for STDs have told me? I am planning to get a pap smear some time in the next few months, but this is just a concern for the time being that I would like to get cleared up.

Re: Pap Smear/STD Testing

Pap smears DO NOT detect STD's. They are done to detect cervical cellular changes. Although, they can detect cervical cellular damage caused by STD's. You can have a whole slew of STD's and have a clean pap. The best, and usually most accurate, test for STD's is usually the old fashioned blood test, although HPV cannot be detected through a blood test! That can only be diagnosed through a visible wart or biopsied tissue.
