How is a Ovarian cyst detected?

Can a gyn find a ovarian cyst with a pelvic exam or pap smear or does it take an ultrasound?

It depends on the size of the cyst- but if one is suspected, it is usually recommended that you have an ultrasound to confirm the size and type of cyst.

I recently had a cyst removed from my ovary, and my Dr was able to tell me during my pelvic exam that I had an enlarged uterus, and she sent me for an ultrasound and that is how they found the cyst

Re: How is a Ovarian cyst detected?

Well that would depend on many variables.

Some cysts can be detected during routine pelvic examinations while others cannot be. I have had all of my cysts missed during pelvic examination.

Some cysts can be found during vaginal or abdominal ultrasounds while others cannot be. I have had more than half of my cysts missed during ultrasound.

Most cysts can be found during CT scan or MRI, however, these studies cannot always be accurate in determining the type of cyst or number of cysts present. I have had several cysts missed during CT scan.

The only manner in which my cysts could be found, diagnosed, and eliminated was via bilateral laparoscopic ovarian cystectomy.

Re: How is a Ovarian cyst detected?

PS--Please note that a Pap Smear has nothing to do with the detection of these types of problems.
