septate hymen!? help needed. - Women's Health Message Board

I am getting married in a little over a year, and was planning some questions that I wanted to ask my gynecologist on my next visit. I had some concerns about my hymen and in doing some research tonight I found that I have a "septate hymen" and on several websites it says that a surgical procedure is usually (but "not always") required and that without it "pain and severe discomfort" may occur during intercourse. I am a virgin and have never tried tampons (which the sites also said would be difficult for me). I'm more than a little freaked out at this point. Does anyone have any advice or information?

Nothing to be freaked out over

Go to your doctor and have him examine you and determine if you in fact do have a septate hymen". And if you do, he/she can easily remove it with a local freezing, right in the office.

They'll freeze the area and then remove the excess flap of skin. I doubt very much that you will need to be hospitalized for it. It's a minor procedure, like a circumcision, and most often done in the doctor's office.

I dont think she even has a septate hymen. Hows shes gonna know if she is still a virgin and not even try tampons? I dont think you need to worry about anything at this point and dont assume everything you read on the internet is true. Wait your doctor made a diagnosis. Congrats on your upcomming wedding!
