Severe breast pain, what to do??!! - Women's Health Message Board

Has anyone else had these problems? I have had severe breast pain for a few years now. It would be excruciating when my period was coming, the rest of the time my breasts would still hurt. It would get so bad I couldn't hug my husband or my daughter. I would pop advil or tylenol constantly to dull the ache. It got so bad that I typed in breast pain on a search engine just to see what some women do for it. I found an interesting book that explained something I never even thought of. BRA's These could be the culprit of breast pain and they have even been linked to breast cancer. The cancer issue that the book brought out made sense. The bra is constricting your breasts which makes it harder for fluids to flow freely in your breasts so the fluid is just sitting there which can cause problems even cancer. This book was written by a doctor. I don't know if I can write the title of the book on this so I won't. Just look it up on the computer. I, embarassingly, took off my bra and I am now wearing camosals. The pain is gone!! It took about three days for the pain to go away completely. Sure, at first, it seemed quite wierd but being pain free was worth it!! The book even told me about the "myth" of sagging breasts from not wearing a bra. It stated that a bra does all the work so your muscles in your chest are not working to hold your breasts up so you would probably sag more because you wear one. While when you are not wearing one your muscles are working to hold them up so your "toning" those muscles. You might have to be more careful in public about running but your breasts move too when you're wearing a bra. I have to say that being pain free and being able to be comfortable hugging my husband and family is well worth it!!

I apologize that this is so long but I would like to know if anyone else had these problems too. The book that I read gave excerps from women who decided to get rid of their bras and that is what gave me the guts to do it too.

Breast pain that seems worse prior to or during your period can be a sign of fibrocystic breasts - a benign condition highly impacted by the hormonal changes of the menstrual cycle and potentially made worse by diet.

Fibrocystic breast disease can be managed by a change in diet to some degree. I recommend that you have a breast exam to rule this condition out.

That said, I'm a huge fan of shelf-bra camis myself

Thank you for replying csoar2004, I was diagnosed with fibrocystic breasts when I was 21. I am now 36. It has been quite a ride these past few years. I did the diet thing and it didn't work, I've also heard that vit. E might help but I take vitamins every day and it doesn't help. I wonder if anyone else has had this problem.

Let me know if you have any other remedies.

Actually the bra and breast cancer link is a myth. Go to the breast cancer website and you can read it yourself. Yes that book was written by a doctor but that is just one doctor's opinion and doesnt make it a fact.
Talk to your doctor about the pain and ask about the so called link between bras and breast cancer.
I have been having pain in my right breast and a lump was even found. Right now I am in the process of having tests done to find out what is going on. My pain isnt dependant on where I am in my cycle though it does come and go. On bad days I cant hug my kids or Dh and can barely move because even the slightest movement can make the pain intensify. Of course I could try going bra free but being a 40 dd makes that impossible...not a pretty sight..lol.
