What's up with Caffeine and cysts???

I have ovarian cysts that can be quite painful. I have pain most of the month because of them. I drink tea, about one cup daily. I have been told that caffeine can cause or exacerbate ovarian cysts, is that true?

Here's the short answer:
First, you should know that estrogen and progesterone are steroids. That doesn't make them bad (don't confuse natural hormones such as these with the nasty synthetic versions) but it does make them susceptible to stimulants. Caffeine is a stimulant. Ergo, caffeine (which is NOT only in coffee, but many black and herbal teas as well as chocolate and many sodas) can stimulate steroid production and in some women, voila! You get ovarian cysts. For a long technical answer, try searching on the term 'ovarian cyst'. You'll find LOTS of info!

I had a ruptured ovarian cyst and my doctor put me on birth control pills because that can prevent them. Have you thought about that?

Hamer,

I can't take birth control due to heart palpatations. They get really severe when I take bc yet I was on a very low dose.

Wow, I didn't realize caffeine could cause ovarian cysts. I was recently dx'd with ovarian cysts and I also drink way too much caffeine. I guess it's time to cut back!
