Locating strings??? - Women's Health Message Board

I have recently had an IUD put in. I tried to locate the strings the other day and had no luck. You would think after just having a baby I would know where my cervix was located, but I guess i dont. I know that everyone is different, but about how far do you have to go before you can feel it? Any help would be great.

You know I just had mine placed too, and I don't know either. lol
I haven't tried to check them yet because of spotting, but I'm guessing that they can't be THAT far up since she told me that if they bothered me, let her know and she would clip them.

All I know is that your cervix is a little farther up that you may be reaching (consider when you were being checked at your prenatal visits, and during labor) and it should be towards the back rather than straight up. Also remember that things changed down there, so it may not be shaped the same.

And as always, you can call your doctor to ask for help over the phone.

The strings are up high. My doctor told me the best time to check is after your period. In the beginning, I was worried about it coming out! I've now had my IUD for 7 years and never had a problem. I don't check for the strings very often, but when I do, sometimes I can feel them and sometimes I can't. For me, it's been wonderful BC.

I have to stick my index finger all the way in to reach my cervix. Maybe if you have short fingers and/or a longer vagina you may not be reaching it. It's pretty obvious when you do. The vaginal walls are soft and spongy (like the inside of your mouth) and the cervix is a harder structure. I don't know how to describe it... like a big cone? (Ok, that was a bit silly LOL) Try to feel for your cervix in different positions. Maybe squatting?
