heavy bleeding and blood clots

I started heavy bleeding 10 days ago. I have been getting depo shots for about 6 months . I was prior bleeding 20-25 days a month. The shot stopped bleeding for 2 months and breakthrough began. Ob said it was normal. I now am having severe cramping and large blood clots. About 3-4 pads a hour. I also got a Uti and began urinating blood last wed. I started antibiotic on friday fever went down and bladder pain is better. I still have the vaginal clots and bleeding with abdominal bloating and severe cramps before the clots. I have called my ob 4 times in 2 weeks. She says nothing we can do since I am on antibiotic and have pain meds. My ob specialist recommended D&C and hysteroscopy which my ob says cant be scheduled till Feb.I have tried ice, heat and shower with no major relief.. Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this with depo shot or any ideas to help with cramps ? I am going to call my specialist in a.m and see what he thinks..

Re: heavy bleeding and blood clots

Maybe I am confused, but 1 depo shot should last 3 months. You can have break thru for your first couple cycles of depo, but not like what you are describing.

If you are losing large quantities of blood that could be much more than the "normal" that your doc is stating. A D&C would remove any fibroids or other problems you have, but waiting to Feb. doesn't make any sense. There are far too many problems from that type of blood lose.

If it was me, I would call someone else and try to get an emergency appointment if your ob/gyn is not willing to see you.

If it was just the clots that were causing you cramps I would say to take an asprin to help dissolve them, but if you are bleeding heavily along with the clots then asprin will increase your bleeding and potentially cause more problems.

Best advice....see someone (even if it is a different doc) as soon as possible.

I don't understand why your doctor said there is nothing they can do. They should atleast check you out, If i'm not mistaken soaking any more than 1 pad/hour is considered hemorging? You are losing a lot of blood. I would be tempted to go to the emergency room if i were you, or find another ob who will agree to see you right away. Write down any meds, problems etc that you have been having so that the doctor can know what is going on, sometimes it's easier to write it down than go by memory alone.

Re: heavy bleeding and blood clots

It really wouldn't hurt to get a second opinion. I was on depo 9yrs. ago for 6mos. I didn't get a period at all. Every person who takes depo has a different reaction, but for the most part depo is suppose to make your periods go away. Maybe your dr. can do an exploratory laparotomy to see what is going on inside of you. I hope you feel better and good luck!
