Irregular periods & vaginal discharge

I turned 17 in July and I am 210 lbs. However, i'm in fairly decent shape and try to keep at least somewhat active. I am not sexually active.

Now that we have this established I feel that I can go on. I started having my period when I was 12 and for the past 5 years I have been irregular. When I would have my period, it would be quite heavy and last for quite some time (7 to 9 days. The longest my period has ever lasted was 14 days.) Afterwords, I go without a period for several months. The longest I have been without a period is 7 months; there has never been a time that I wasn't "skipping a period." (I wouldn't really call it skipping. Skipping would imply that there was some sort of regularity.)

Recently, my period has only lasted a few days (2-3 days), has been very light, and the discharge has been more brown than reddish and has not had the consistency of what I've come to see as a normal period (it's a little thicker and seems more solid than fluid-ish.) The irregularity is still there, but now I'm actually getting rather worried.

My last doctor told me that I was irregular because I was overweight, anotyher said it wasn't normal and I needed to see a specialist. Yet another doctor said that he didn't know what could be causing the problem. Can you help me solve this mystery?

Re: Irregular periods & vaginal discharge

Have you been to a gyn? If no one has done a blood test yet you need another opinion. Yes, being overweight can cause irregular periods. But hormones problems can cause irregular periods and weight gain. So who's to say which is which without a blood test. Since you are only 17 and a virgin I'm sure you will be able to find one who will delay a pelvic exam too, if you are concerned about that. My gyn waited until I was 24 and lost my virginity to do one.

Re: Irregular periods & vaginal discharge

I need to know more about your circumstance to give you an answer.

1. When you say 'irregular' does that mean 1 period every few months or sometimes a period every few months, sometimes every month, sometimes more than once per month? I am assuming you mean only once every few months (thus fewer than 6-8 periods per year?)

2. Are you 'overweight' and have you been since you were 12?

If you are overweight, it can most definately cause this problem. Fat cells contain estrogen and the more fat cells you have, the more estrogen circulates in your body. The higher levels of estrogen act almost like a birth control pill in that it can sometimes inhibit ovulation hence very irregular and either very light or very heavy bleeding. I had a friend who was 300 pounds and had a very heavy period once every 6 months. She lost about 100 or so pounds and all of a sudden had regular periods every month. This is very common. Each person's weight threshold is different though. For some people they have to been 300 pounds to ovulate very irregularly and some people it is only 200 or so.

If you experienced a sudden weight gain it is possible that you have an underactive thyroid- that could also cause these symptoms.

Or.....this could just be plain normal for you.

It would probably be helpful to have a hormone workup if you are really worried about it though.
