Angry Bleeding after Pap Smear

I had a Pap Smear with a new to me gyn md on Tues., it was the most painful pap I've experienced, and I've been bleeding & cramping ever since. Anyone else ever experience this before ?

Re: Bleeding after Pap Smear

Hi maxene,

I had a painful ThinPrep smear a few months ago: the dr used the cytobrush so hard that I was cramping and spotting for a couple of days afterwards.

How much bleeding are you talking about? Maybe you should call your dr and let him know?

Hope you feel better soon!

Re: Bleeding after Pap Smear

Thank you for your reply ElenaK. I have a call into my md's office, they haven't returned my call. I'm spotting bright red 3 days later & occasionally I cramp and more blood comes out.

Re: Bleeding after Pap Smear

Sounds like he did some pretty vigorous swabbing/scraping there (sigh...). Some drs use the cytobrush in place of a curette for an ECC... However, it is best to check with him and make sure all is OK.

Let us know how you are doing.

Re: Bleeding after Pap Smear

Hi Maxene
I had my smear about 6 weeks ago. They have never hurt me before, but this time the pain was so bad I screamed out. When it was finished I got scared cause I was bleeding. For a few days after I was cramping and bleeding. I spoke with a nurse where i work cause I was worried but she reassured me it is normal in some people to experience this. Also she said the nurse could of been a bit rough. Hope this helps

Re: Bleeding after Pap Smear

how's that possible? Last pap smear for me I wondered if she really did a smear cause I really did not felt anything and was so fast, seconds. Guess I have a good GYN then.

Re: Bleeding after Pap Smear

I used to have my Family Dr. do my pap smears...Oh, they HURT! I stopped getting them done. Then I was having vaginal burning and went to my Family Dr. and he referred me to a Gyno. He is much, much better. My pap was fast and didn't hurt nearly as much as before!! I no longer dred paps.

Re: Bleeding after Pap Smear

A personal rule for me is to never have pap test done by a man. A man doesn't have what I have and doesn't knwo how sensitive it can be. Not that all woman are sensitive too, but I find men are far worse at that. I had one male Dr. do it and i thought he was scraping my insides out! I never had him do that again.

Re: Bleeding after Pap Smear

I didnt experience any extreme pain or cramping during my pap, the only discomfort was pressure associated with the insertion of the speculum. The only time I experienced bleeding was when I had an internal ultrasound.
