The Torture Of Pelvic Ultrasound

How many of you have had pelvic ultrasounds? You know, where you drink more water than even your stomach can hold, then you have to hold it in your bladder while they squish it every which way? Meanwhile you think that either your bladder will burst or you are going to pee all over the ultrasonographer??

Had one today. Great fun. Thanks for letting me vent. Share your stories!

Re: The Torture Of Pelvic Ultrasound

But, for me the worst part is when at the end they say "I think we'll go ahead and do a transvaginal ultrasound to get some better images."

After drinking all the water and showing up, Another girl & I were told the
technician was running late and wouldn't be there for another hour !!!
I said where's the bathroom, and I'll need more water!

Re: The Torture Of Pelvic Ultrasound

I arrived for my ultrasound and I had not been told to drink water. They made me have to wait in the office and drink water. Then the tec took forever doing the ultrasound, finally I said I have to pee. I had to run across the hall with a sheet rapped around me lol. That was my worst experience. I have had so many I got used to them.
Hilery79 that happened to me too. The transvaginal ultrasounds are the worst!! One thing I noticed is, if they do the ultrasounds in the normal dr office there not as bad as going to a special testing place to have them done. That is my experience any way.

I definitely know the feeling. I had both a pelvic ultrasound and a transvaginal ultrasound just a few weeks ago. Neither was a picnic thats for sure.

Question Re: The Torture Of Pelvic Ultrasound

I had my first pelvic and transvaginal ultrasound today for abnormal bleeding postmenopausal. My endocrinologist thinks it's probably a polyp & my pcp suggested maybe a small fibroid.

Questions: During the pelvic ultrasound, I could see the screen and asked if the big black circle was my uterus. She (tech) said no, that was my bladder - my uterus was a tiny little "nodule" below it that kept disappearing and I would say no bigger than the end of my thumb! (I've never been pregnant.) Okay, then she went to do the transvaginal ultrasound and immediately turned the monitor towards her - I could not see it. {removed} {removed}

She was actually very gentle advancing the wand very slowly and turning it but not hard. Nonetheless, I have some tender areas internally and afterwards, several hours later have some burning in my low front pelvic area and just sense of discomfort. {removed} She said they would fax the report to my doc in 2 or 3 days so I assume that's standard if nothing's seen in there. {removed}

I did not drink all that much water - I couldn't - and told them so in advance and they never said a peep about it during the test. I did have to wait 45 mins after I got there so it's a good thing I did NOT try the 32 ozs of water!

Re: The Torture Of Pelvic Ultrasound

I had the transvaginal done last year and I thought I was going to die. I dont think labor was that bad. I also had a biopsy doen at the same time. Bad part was I was hemmoraging when it was done and you should have seen the dr. office apter he got done. it looke like someone had be slaughtered in there.LOL He had to pull 3 huge syringes of blood from me before he could do both procedures. I was suppose to have a hysterectomy done a year ago. still havent had it done

Re: The Torture Of Pelvic Ultrasound

Hi Ladies,

I have had 4 vaginal ultrasounds done. None of them hurt at all. How old are yall? Maybe it is because you have not had children. I am 54 with 2 girls. Did they put the foam thing under you? Or maybe my tech. was just more skilled than the ones that you guys had?!

I do not understand why you have to have a pelvic ultrasound and a vaginal one? My dr. never even mentioned the pelvic. I did have a biopsy on a separate visit and that hurt terribly. If I ever have to have another one, I will ask for valium and hydrocodone!!! Mine was for heavy bleeding after menopause.

Hope yall find a softer technician next time. Take care. Wannabe

Re: The Torture Of Pelvic Ultrasound

i went to a specialist once for a sonogram. they had me get up and got to the bathroom because i was way too full. they told me that you should feel like you have to go but not to the point of being ucofortable. when i was pregnant all 3 times i never drank as much as they say to. i think i drank 1 cup of water just before i left and that was enough. they never said anything about my bladder not being full enough. they say that they tell people to drink a gallon of water before coming because most go to the bathroom anyways. i was like great so those that listen suffer.

Re: The Torture Of Pelvic Ultrasound

I am 36 and I have had two children oan 1 miscarrage. I had to have mine done for hemmoraging. Not just heavy bleeding I was hemmogaring. for 3 months non stop. I was suppose to have a hysterectomy done over a year ago and still have not had it done. I cant have anymore children anyway so that is no big deal I just dont want the hormone therepy afterwards. Im not memopasal ot premenopasal I have what they call adenomyosis. inside out endo. which is next to my artery and causing freeflow of the blood because my uterus cannot contract normally to stop the bloodflow. I could actually bleed to death from it . but oh well that is just one of lifes little surprises i guess. what ever happens happens

Re: The Torture Of Pelvic Ultrasound

MMM... had one a few weeks ago and had to go to the toilet twice before I had it cuz I just couldn't hold on. So I walked to the hospital from work drinkinh a bottle of water. Of course I was dying to go by the time I had the ultrasound even though I was first in. It was so hard when she was pressing on my stomach! I was peeing loads for the rest of the day too!

Re: The Torture Of Pelvic Ultrasound

I've had a couple of pelvic ultrasounds. Yes, they are uncomfortable. The last one in January the tech said my bladder was filling up even more during the ultrasound. She understood about running to the bathroom immediately after.

I had a uterine biopsy in January too, because of heavy bleeding and bleeding in between periods. I was told by my sister, who has had two, to take 2 extra strength tylenol. She said she only felt tugging on her second biopsy. But, I was even luckier....the ob/gyn put lidocaine in before doing biopsy. NO PAIN.
