Teenager and Period Frequency - Women's Health Message Board

Could anyone tell me when a teenagers period will become regular? My 14 year old says she has missed for the last couple of months. She started a little less then 2 years ago. No, she is not pregnant! I think she is concerned that she is not having it, and I'm not sure what to tell her. I do keep saying these things take time to straighten out, but is that right?

I didn't get mine till i was 14 and I had it aor about 2 months straight, then it went away for 9 months. Came back and I bled for 2 weeks straight, went away again and didn't return until my freshman year in highschool. I think it's her body just trying to adjust and it varies from teen girl to teen girl. To this day i get it every month...just not on the same EXACT day. I can get it the first of the month, then the last week, then the middle of the week...it's never "on time." If need be, i see no harm in taking her to the Dr. just as a precaution, but they might just tell you the same thing.

Stress and eating disorders, among other things can cause menstrual irregularity. I'm sure it's just that your daughter is young though. If I were you, I'd make an appointment for her for a checkup with a gynecologist. She needs to learn about taking care of her reproductive health anyway, and you can go with her and ask the doctor questions on her behalf, and it will set her mind at ease.

I had the same thing happen to me when I started getting my period. I got it when I was 12 and then it didn't come again for another 5 months, then it would skip a couple months, and it took about 3 years before it became semi-regular, but even now, I'm 22, and I still skip one every few months, usually due to stress but any number of things could cause it to be irregular. It's pretty common and shouldn't be anything to worry about. I agree if it's still a concern to her maybe talking to a doctor would help, even if they tell you exactly the same thing it would at least reduce her anxiety about it.

Yes, periods can be quite erractic in the early teen years. I still would not rule out a possible pregnancy, you can never be too sure of what they are up to when they aren't with us. If the test come backs negative, birth control might be a good idea. It will regulate her cycle and the flow won't be as heavy.
