Large ovarian Cyst - Women's Health Message Board

So I have a cyst on my right ovary. It's at least the size of a golf ball. And it's started to cause me some pain, and my doctor is having me go in for an ultrasound, and also a consultation with a GYN about having it removed. My question is this: Is having it removed an invasive procedure? How long would I be out from work?

I ask this because I had my Gallbladder removed last august, and I had all sorts of complications and was in and out of the hospital four times over the course of a month. I missed a lot of work, they were very understanding, but I also don't want to have to miss a lot of work again.

Is there anyone that has had a cyst removed that would be comfortable telling me about the procedure. What it involves? How invasive it is? How long you were laid up? That type of thing. Any information you can give me will be helpful. Thanks in advance.

I have never had a cyst removed. I read in Dr. John Lee's book called "What your doctor may not tell you about premenopause" that you can do things yourself to get your ovarian cysts to go away. Something about balancing your hormones. You may want to check this book out of the library and see if it might help you avoid surgery.

I was going to have one removed. I was actually in the hopital (5.5 cm) when it ruptured

. Sad. But they were going to remove mine as a lap. It was outpatient, so I would be in the hospital for the prep, the surgury, and the short recovery (while you wake up) they said 6 -8 hours. They also told me to plan to do nothing for 2-4 weeks. (2 months if they had to remove my ovary-only because it was so large, i doubt that for you.) I had only taken 2 off of work, and figured on doing half days for the other two, depending on how I felt. They make 2 incisions. They fill your abdomin with CO2 then they make 2 cuts one for the CO2, and the other for the laparoscopy. One is on or near(under) the belly button and the other is around your abdomin, they said about 5-10 mm long each one. Then they will 'suck out' the cyst. You can do a internet search, so much will come up, you may have to look at a few before it gives you details. I'd give you a link, but it would just be editied!

you helped a lot, but didn't make me feel very good. i had my gall bladder removed by lap, and it was a HORRIBLE experience.

and my cyst was 6cm 5 months ago. who knows how big it is now. i'll find out after the ultrasound on thursday.

and please oh please, i hope to God they don't have to remove my ovary. my husband and i are planning on having children in a year and a half or so. the last thing i need is to make it harder for me to get pregnant.
