Procedures and scared

I go in in September (nurse is scheduling the procedures) for a D&C w/hysteroscopy and a Laparoscopy. They are doing everything at the same time. I'm freaking out! I am so nervous! Can anyone ease my fears? I've read on hear how awful that shoulder pain is and the doctor said the key is to get up and move around afterward. Seriously, how easy it is to get up and move when you're drugged on pain killers? I want to hear from people who've been there and not someone in a lab coat who hasn't. I'm just terrified something is going to go wrong with anethesia. But then, who doesn't have that fear?

Re: Procedures and scared

Nothing will go wrong with the anesthesia.. the odds are in your favor. I had a d&c yrs ago and it wasnt fun. I had a son premature and bled out.. incomplete placenta remained in the uterus. Anyway, I was under a general and woke up to mild cramps.. then when the anesthesia wore off they were pretty dang strong and I bled quite a bit.The cramps lasted several days and my doc gave me vicodin after I yelled at him about him not having a uterus so what the "bleep" would HE know. Anyway, Its not fun for a few days but then after the bleeding stops youre fine. As for getting up and moving around I was told to lay down and stay down.. to control the bleeding. Maybe its different now or you have a different issue than I did.

All in all its not so bad.

Im goign to go beg for an ablation but Im scared of it so Im in your boat too... the unknown is scary! We all can get through scary stuff if we discuss it and have a good support system and TRUTHFUL answers to our questions!

Re: Procedures and scared

I had laproscopic hernia repair (which is more invasive than just a laparoscopy to look around) and i was up the same day You are sore I am not going to lie to you but you can walk around the same day the next day they encourage you to be as normal as possible (no lifting of course) but you can get up and walk around. Do not be nervous when your shoulder hurts from the gas but that went away for me i think the second day. I went in, they hook up the IV, gave me something that would supposedly rellax mebut i felt high..lol then the next thing you know youare waking up! i was there a TOTAL of 3 hours and then you go home. good luck!

Re: Procedures and scared

I have had a whole list of procedures done...

C section-1998
tubal pg-1999{laparotomy}
c section-2000
colonoscopy-2002{thinking it was IBS}
laparoscopy-2004{endometriosis surgery}
lithotripsy-2004{kidney stone removal}
c section-2005{blood transfusion also with surgery}
laparotomy{tubes tied{2005}

So don't worry on the procedures,everything will be fine.Just remember to take it easy so you don't get a hernia.Walk around after a little to break up the gassiness.Don't lift anthing heavy.As for cramps,I think it depends on the person and how their body reacts.And for the shoulder pain,it could be gas.That's what I was told.I had that after my c section.That's why I mentioned to walk around.

Re: Procedures and scared

I know you are scred but dont be.

I had a Colonoscopy in around Feb 2005, then a Lap with d&c in april 2005
then a hyst in may 2005.

You will be fine. Just walk around to help the gas pass, believ me there will be a quite a bit of gass, and try peppermint tea. Any questions, that is what we are here for!!
GOOD LUCK and let us know what happens.
