Ovarian Cyst? Terrible pain! - Women's Health Message Board

I will make this as brief as possible...

I am 31 and have had three live births. I had a Mirena IUD placed in 9/04, 8 weeks post-partum. In or around April or May of this year, I had a period, almost constant for 7 weeks. Lots of pain when urinating, similar to a bladder infection. I went to the doctors and requested that the IUD be removed and he said, no joke, that this would probably make things worse for me. He was a real piece of work. They put me on antibiotics but I had no bladder infection or STD. They wanted me to go in for an U/S but I had no insurance and was irritated with his bedside manners so I didnt go.

My period has been irratic and unpredictable. For the last two months, about a week before my periiod comes, I have a TERRIBLE pain in the area of my left ovary. If I push on it, it hurts much more and if my bladder is full, I can feel a lump in that area. This month has been much worse in that the pain is going into my back and down my thigh. Anyone familiar with cysts? Is there anything I can do over the counter to help this situation? Will this resolve on its own? We wont have health insurance for another two months.

I am very familiar with cysts of the ovaries. They can wreak havoc with one's periods. Ranging from no period at all or bleeding all the time. I however have never experienced pain from a cyst. I know you mentioned that you don't have insurance and won't for a couple of months, and that you were not pleased with your current doctor, but I do think you need follow up with this and perhaps find a different doctor. They can and usually do resolve on their own, and if women realized how many cysts they actually have/get during their life they would be astonished. There really isn't anything that you can get OTC that will help get rid of them, only make the symptoms somewhat tolerable. Check around on the internet for physicians that offer services at a discounted price in light of you not having insurance. I understand your frustration with the medical profession and what you are going through. I hope things get better for you soon!

You had no pain from the cysts? Do you know what size they were/are? I am nervous because like I had said, if my bladder is full, then I can feel a large lump right where it hurts, thats why I was thinking a cyst.

Where we live, there is a clinic that works on a sliding fee scale but unfortunatley, they are not accepting new patients so that leaves with with the option of the local hospital but I cant begin to fathom the expense of that visit. I guess I will sit and wait on it but I do thank you for your insight.

I have had pain with my cysts. They have always gone away on their own though. Right now I have something that is causing pain in my pelvic area all the way to under my ribs, in my side, back and down my leg. I had a u/s and it was normal. I' don't know if it's a cyst or not.

However, the cysts the docs have found have gone away after a couple of weeks on their own. First time I had one, I was told it was a hernia. Second time I was told it could be cronic appendicitis!

This is certainly hurting into my back and hip and then down the leg. What scares me is how much it hurts and the fact that I can feel a lump. I know it is not appendicitis for me since it is on my left side AND my brother in law just had it so I am familiar with the symptoms.
