SEVERE period pain

I am writing on this forum to hopefully find some answers from other women who may have experienced the painful periods that I am now. My GP is sending me see a gynochologist as my periods are so painful that no painkillers I have been prescribled are working. They have always been bad, so much so that I used to take upto 9 nurofen a day, in doses of 3 tablets. Eventually these stopped working. My period is not particularly heavy however. In April of this year I came off my contraception pill Yasmin, as I am planning on starting a family with my husband in the next 12-months and we thought it wise to get the contraception out of my system. My periods are now about once every 7-weeks and so painful that I dread the next one as soon as one finishes. My GP prescribed me with Ponstan - Mefenamic Acid, which worked the 1st time I tried it, but this last period was so bad that I had no relief from the drug and had 5 in one day and 2 nurofen, and had to be sent home from work uncontrollably sobbing! My GP has now referred me to a GP and mentioned that I may have to have a scan? I dont know what to expect with this; what they will find, what they can do about it etc. I am just hoping that there might be someone out there who has had the same experience and who might be able to help me understand what to expect etc. I await a reply anxiously! Oh...GP has now prescribed me diclophenics? Anyone know if these will help? Many thanks x

Re: SEVERE period pain

Hey There!

I am so sorry that you are having so much pain! Man, do I know how you feel! You do need to see a good GYN, or Pelvic Pain Specialist ASAP. I have a disease called endometriosis. It effects millions of women, and may be the reason for your pain. Go to any search engine and type in endometriosis. See if the symptoms fit. They most likely will. There are not many things that cause this type of severe pain around your menses. Let me know what you find out!

Your Friend,

Amanda

Re: SEVERE period pain

Whilst your pain does sound more severe, my best friend had very bad pains, sore breasts and really bad PMT. She is a nutritional therapist and she pretty much cured herself by cutting out sodium (pretty much completely, not just stopped adding salt to her food), and eating a diet high in yams. Not the kind also known as sweet potato, but proper African yams. She also took a few supplements but they were incidental to her dietary changes.
After 3 months she was like a new woman!
Yours may be beyond fixing with diet completely, but it might help the worst of the symptoms.

Re: SEVERE period pain

I too have really bad period pain. I too took about 12 advil a day which unfortunately gave me an ulcer. So my doctor prescribed me prescrition pain killers and they do nothing for me. I am looking too for an answer. I just had a laparoscopy done to see if I had endometriosis and to my surprise I didn't. I guess I just have unusual pain. I hope it gets better for you!

Re: SEVERE period pain

hello i had my baby girl 2 yrs ago and since i had her for 2 yrs all i have did was bleed the whole 2 yrs been checked for endometriosis cervial cancer overain cancer etc.everything keep coming back fine but finally all 5 drs figured it out the before you start your period your uterus opens up to allow the blood to flow and then closes back but my uterus is staying swelled so thats why i keep bleeding.i'v had lapascopic surgery 3 times 7 d&cs but i am in alot of pain on painkillers for 2 yrs.i am going to try the ablasion surgery the one where they go into uterus and send electric shock into it and see if that works hopefully surgerys in 2 weeks,i am very anemic low blood count and back killing me all the time i can't wait for everything to get back to normal.

Re: SEVERE period pain

You might have endometriosis. This is a new zealand web site but it is pretty good --> http://www.endometriosis.co.nz/
This is the "Self diagnosis quiz" Found on the site.
Do you have:

- Period pain that causes you to take pain medications (e.g. Panadol) every month?
- Period pain that results in you needing to spend time in bed?
- Period pain or pain throughout your cycle that causes you to have time off work?
- Heavy bleeding and/or bleeding between your periods?
- Pain midway through your cycle?
- Pain when having sex?
- Pain with bowel motions?
- Pain with a full bladder?
- A mother, sister or female relative who has had the above symptoms, or had to have a hysterectomy for pain or bleeding?

If you are concerned about any of these symptoms, it is important that you speak to your GP or Specialist. Ask for a referral to the Endometriosis Centre at Ascot for further assessment. Early detection can make a difference.
~
On the website there is a FAQ with lots of information. And an About Endometriosis section.

Re: SEVERE period pain

You are among freinds in misery! I have had horrible cramps all my life. Back in middle and high school I would always miss class the first day of my period the pain was soo bad. Back then it would take 4 ibuprofin at a time to lessen the pain (which I would have to smuggle to school because you were not allowed to self medicate). After our daughter was born the cramps, and heavy bleeding became unbearable. I was anemic for sometime and took iron therapy for months on end. I had a lump removed from my c-section scar that the lab determined was endometrial tissue, hence endometriosis. I've had standard, vaginal and saline infused ultrasounds. Never had a bad pap but had a biopsy taken just to check. All tests through the years have been negative. I tried the pill...which helped somewhat but left me cranky and with no sex drive, then the norplant...which also helped for a while then didn't. By then I was taking naproxen...up to 8 tabs a day...that went on for 5yrs. I decided I didn't want to cause myself stomach damage so I begged for an alterative. My doctor prescribed me toradol (ketoralac)10mg. 1 tab every 6 hours as needed. It does the trick and is the only thing that totally rids me of pain. I average 3-4 pills per cycle usually on my first 2 days instead of the 16 + tabs. a cycle. Functioning like a human is a beautiful thing!
