passing clots with period

I know this is a strange question, but does anyone pass big clots with their period? I do most of the time, but this month was really bad. I woke up at 2 in the morning gushing blood and passing clots. It was running down my legs and even got on the carpet. Every month it seems to get worse. I'm 35 and have had two children, and have got my tubes tied. Is this something to be concerned about? Also, I usually don't have a lot of pain with my periods, but this month I did. I cramped a lot. I also get anemic with this because of bleeding so much. I know that part is normal, but the clots I'm not really sure. They are pretty big.

Re: passing clots with period

I did have similiar problems when I was around your age. Within the next few years I started with the symptoms of perimenopause. I had heard of women going in for a simple procedure that straightens things out (D&C i think), but I didn't hear about it until recently and it no longer applies to me.

Check the symptoms for perimenopause.

Re: passing clots with period

I'm 36, had pregnancies years ago, my oldest is 17 and the youngest 14. I have clotting every month but I do have pretty bad cramping. My problem though is that I have pretty bad fibroids, they were found on ultrasound. I also have a very heavy period that seems to be getting closer together every year or so.

Re: passing clots with period

I had periods like that, too. I found out I had a ton of polyps that I just had removed yesterday with a D&C.

My suggestion is to go see your ob/gyn for an ultrasound to determine whether you have polyps. Then if necessary, get a hysteroscopy and D&C as I did, to clear out your uterus. The bleeds I had during my period were insane because of how much I bled, but my doc said that since the polyps are gone, it should improve a lot.

Re: passing clots with period

I had similar periods throughout my teenage years and in my twenties. Later I discovered it was endometriosis and fibriod cysts. It was totally disgusting. The cramping was very severe as well. For about a year and a half I took prescribed pain medications due to relieve the symptoms and birth control pills. Even with the birth control pills, I still bled through during the month. It was absolutely awful. My body was so messed up.

Contact a Gynecologist soon.

You have my empathy.

Re: passing clots with period

I've always passed lots of blood and lots of clots. I can always tell when the clots are going to start coming; that is when I start having lower back pain that won't quite. It's quite horrible and sure puts a damper on your social life for one week out of the month.

Good luck to thosehaving something done. I hope it helps.

Re: passing clots with period

Hello there. I know where you are coming from. I have polycystic ovaries and have always passed clots. Some months are better than others, but some are worse than others. My advice is to contact your gyn. Be sure that when you have your period, take little notes down of what day was heaviest, how many times did you have to change, how many days did it last, other symptoms. I've had Birth Control Pills, but had a DVT in my leg so had to be off them, then had an IUD that I had to have surgically removed.

Different people will have different reasons as to why they are having the blood clots passing during their period. I highly suggest having an appointment with your GYN to discuss what is going on.

Re: passing clots with period

Hello. I'm 45 and I have been passing clots the past few years along with heavy cramping. I was rushed to the ER almost 2 weeks ago for severe pain and passing large clots. After they did the ultrasound they advised me I have some fibroid tumors. I have an appt. later this week with a specialist. You really need to get checked out. There are so many options out there. I know this is scary so hang in there!

Re: passing clots with period

thank you all for your responses. It's nice to know that people really do care. I will contact my gyn, and see what he thinks about it. One thing I like about him, it that he does a pelvic inspection and vaginal ultrasound at the visit. Some of them don't do that. I'll keep you posted. Thanks again

Re: passing clots with period

I am 37 and have just started to pass clots for the last few years. This month however I have had where I fill the toilet it just comes gushing out. I am currently under a doctors care. I have a fibroid that needs to be removed that he feels is the cause of my bleeding. Just cant get the bleeding to stop long enough to operate. I am in the same boat as you and have been told the older you get the harder they get. just hang in there. If you soak thru a pad a hour get to the hopital.........
