Ultra sound results from my ovarian cysts/Anyone relate?

I went to see my gyno today to get my tests results explained to me face to face. What we decided was that I would go through one more period cycle, have another ultra sound. If the cyst has changed or gotten bigger. We are going to take it out.

Here is some of what my report said.

In the left overy there is a complex cystic mass measureing approximately 3.2X3.0X3.4 cn which demonstares on excrescence of solid tissue on one wall. Solid tissue appears to demostrate some blood flow on the color dopler imaging. Differential diagnosis would include hemorrhagic cyst. Although appearence is somewhat unusual. Differential diagnosis would also include atypical dermoid, although there is no evidence of calcifications or echogenic plug or possibly cystic ovarian neoplasm. Recommend follow-up ultrasound examination of the pelvis with vaginal imaging in 6 weeks to further evalute complex left ovarian cyst.

Okay so my gyno says if she operated on everyone that presented with a cysts like this she would be driving a mercedes and there would be women being operated on multiple times of the day. She says she is not worried. That there is no evidence that stands out it is anything worrisome although we need to follow it. If it chnages or gets bigger it's coming out.

This is making be so nausias and the pain from mid cycle until day two of my period is so extreme. I would like it out. I guess. Although she is kind of pushing for a hysto due to fibriod pain. I have more pain fro this cysts than fibriod pain though. I am due the 27th for my period and than I get the ultra sound. So I guess I will hang in there. However I can say. I am alittle freaked out by it all. Oh and I also have two fibriods.

Can anyone relate?

Thanks

Re: Ultra sound results from my ovarian cysts/Anyone relate?

I can!

I went to a new doctor back in March to seek out alternative BC than the pill. He's an infertility specialist -- not TTC here ... just a referral from one of my best friends who loves this doc -- and he did an ultrasound himself before we considered an IUD. He found what he suspects are endometrial cysts. We've followed them for about six months now with two repeat ultrasounds. Like your doctor, he doesn't think they're cancer, but he did say they're not simple cysts; that if they don't shrink or go away, they'll need to come out.

Unfortunately, I think my decision would be easier if I were in pain with my periods or ovulation. Pain is a good motivator! Part of me just wants to take the conservative approach and monitor them regularly; part of me wants to just get them out to avoid potential problems with these buggers later.

I also wish this were a doctor I'd known for a long time, had a trusted relationship with. His reputation is incredible, tho. He was voted "the best of the best" in my state from my state medical association. He was also one of the first pioneers in the USA to have successful in-vitro fertilization. His passion in life is preserving and protecting a woman's organs. Even tho I'm not TTC, I'd like to think he'd take great care and caution with my womanly parts

Anyway, I can certainly relate to all the questions and concerns that are going through your mind.

Best of luck with whatever route you decide to take.

Re: Ultra sound results from my ovarian cysts/Anyone relate?

Hey thanks for your reply. I do have pain. Last month was not so bad. However this month I am 14 days away from my period and I am already having alot of pain. My Gyno though, is really kind of pushing the whole hysto thing as far as when and if I need surgery. She says alot of women feel as long as they are going in for surgery that they might as well have their uterus out as well if that is causeing them pain due to fibriods.

Since they found this cysts I wonder if I am not having more pain from it than the actual fibriod.

She said no she does not think it is cancer. She did say that anything is possible though. She cannot be positively certain it is not. Which I understand.

I don't know. I just need to stay calm and get through this next period. Have my ultra sound and than decide what I want to do.

Dosen't size make it more likely to be cancer as well? Like over 5 cm? Mine is like 3 cm by 3 cm or so and my fibroids actually shrunk since last ultra sound 3years agao. Does anyone have any idea about size of cysts?

Thanks again

Re: Ultra sound results from my ovarian cysts/Anyone relate?

The size of the cyst has no bearing on if it is cancerous or not. I have a history of ovarian cysts. I was recently (Aug 21, 2006) diagnosed with a 5cm hemorrhagic ovarian cyst. When I was 17 I had a cyst that was 20cm x 18cm x 10cm and it was a dermoid cyst. I had to have surgery for that one. My fallopian tube encased the cyst also. I still have both ovaries but one fallopian tube. The hemorrhagic cyst is on the same side that the dermoid cyst was on. By the way I'm 33 now. I have to go back in six months for a follow up ultrasound. I had one six weeks after the first discovery of this new cyst that sent my cycle for a loop and the cyst has since shrunk to 1cm and two new smaller cysts are there that are less than 1cm. I know it's hard, but try to relax and get through this next period and go for your follow up exam.

Re: Ultra sound results from my ovarian cysts/Anyone relate?

Hi

Boy, I can relate to what you are going through. Since June, I had been having alot of heavy, long periods and pain on my lower right side. I just finished a 30 day period. Right before my period, I get really bad pressure on the right side and my bladder. I end up having to make several trips to the bathroom. When it starts, it's heavy and very painful. The pressure doesn't let up till the end of it and maybe a couple days after it.

I went to my gyn, she examined me during my 30 day period. I had alot of pain. She started me on provera and sent me for lab work and ultrasound. I got the ultrasound back and was told that there was a 3.4 cm cyst on the right ovary as well as 2 daughter cysts.

I was given several options but due to high blood pressure that elimanted several of them. Also, provera causes headaches. One of the options was to have an IUD put in. Studies show it can reduce the flow and hopefully shrink the cyst. The other was to go in and remove it.

I originally planned on surgery then after thinking about it. I realized it would be too hard to get through recovery and go to grad school. So, I decided to go in and have an IUD put in this thursday. Then they will recheck with ultrasound in 4-5 months. If it is still there, then surgery will be the next step.

Going through this is so hard. I am still not sure of my decision and the thought of an IUD in my uterus makes me nervous, but on the other hand if it shrinks the cyst then I won't have to do surgery. My biggest concern about all this is they don't know the type of the cyst. This is kind of scary for me. I want to be able to have children and I have a feeling that might not happen.

Research all of your options and get a 2nd opinion.

Jennifer

Re: Ultra sound results from my ovarian cysts/Anyone relate?

Hi,
It sounds like you may have endometriosis. I was going through the same thing for years, before mine was diagnosed. Very painful. Make sure you go to a specialist if you can. My family doctor took way too long to figure out what was wrong. I had huge cyst on my left ovary along with the endo. Surgery isn't too bad if the laproscopic is done. I had that done the first time, but the doc left some of the cyst behind. The second operation was more invasive. Almost like a C section. It worked tho. No more problems. My left ovary was removed along with the rest of the endo. What a relief.
Do some research. These message boards are great. So much info. Oh, and if you have endo, you might want to get your thyroid checked. Low thyroid will have an effect on the menstrual cycle. I have it, so I've been there. Good luck.
Robin

Re: Ultra sound results from my ovarian cysts/Anyone relate?

Hi Robin, I have wondered about endo. Can you get endo at any time of your life? I have never had trouble with it before. I have had two c-sections. The last one being almost 4 years agao. They had my uterus and overies actually sitting on my stomach as they went through it all and stiched it back up. There was nothing than except my very large fibriod.

I had my thyroid tested last year at this time and it was fine. ALthough I know htings can change in a years time. I am due for a mamo and yearly blood workup like colestreal ect.

I am 42. Could I now be having trouble with endo I never asked my gyno.

for those familiar with ultrasounds, why would they not be able to see an ovary? i had one and everything was normal, except that.

Re: Ultra sound results from my ovarian cysts/Anyone relate?

My Cysts is GONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WHOOOOOOOOOOOOoo HOOOOOOOOOOOOOO I am so happy . I did not think it would be due to the fact I still have some of the same symptoms. Not as severe however. My period is back on track though so that is good.

I think it most likely burst about a week agao in the middle of the night. I sat straight up in so much pain. Within two hours I was feeling much better and the pain went away.

My fibriod however went from 2 inches to almost 5. Last month it had shrunk. Now it's bigger again.

We are talking hysto again.

Thank-you EVERYONE for your comments and support. I love these boards!

Re: Ultra sound results from my ovarian cysts/Anyone relate?

I had two surgeries for ovarian cysts. In 1990 after years of pain I had an ultrasound. I had a 10cm cyst. I was 25 at the time. They did surgery. The cysts was wrapped around the fallopian tube so they removed that. Then in 1995 the pain started again. I had a small cyst that was getting bigger and more painful. So they went in for more surgery. They tried it through the belly button but had to give me the major cut. The cyst was small but I had rubberbands of scar tissue that they removed. I was told at the time the ovary was also removed but 10 years later an ultrasound shows a normal ovary. That is a whole other issue freaking me out. They insist the ovary is still there. I've had ultrasounds over the years. Each time there is always a small cyst (2 or 3 cm) on the opposite side of the surgery. They always disappear after my cycle. I was told by the last technician to only get the vaginal ultrasounds because of my history. This way I won't have to drink all that water either. My opinion is that the dr. is right. If it starts getting bigger then I would opt for surgery. With fibroids I think they have a procedure where they can cut off the blood supply to it so it shrinks and you would not need a hysterectomy. Not sure what it is called. I read about it somewhere.

Re: Ultra sound results from my ovarian cysts/Anyone relate?

Hi Hessie28. Wow they said they took your overy and now they insist it is still there. I guess if I were you and this was really bothering me. I would ask that they read through your records from your sugery to see what they actually say about having had it removed.

Cysts are such a bother for women. Statistics say tons of women get them all the time every month even. Most not knowing they have them and they just go away on their own. Some women get small ones that hurt like heck and others discover they have a 6, 8 or even 10 cm one that never gave them any trouble and they find out they need surgery .

I am sorry you have had such a difficult time with yours. I really thought I was going to have to have to have mine removed because it was so painfull and it also looked like it was bleeding into itself.

My daughter has very irregular periods and sometimes she has so much pain that will have me running her to the er only to get into the praking lot and the pain gets less and goes away. I wonder if she dosen't have cysts as well that come and go and soemtimes burst.

I hope you find answers. I can totally understand how concerning it would be to find out you still have an overy that they told you was taken out. Makes you wonder what is up with the dr who did your surgery. Why would he say he took it out when he did not.

Good Luck to you

Re: Ultra sound results from my ovarian cysts/Anyone relate?

Thanks. I actually switched doctors. I got copies of my records for the new GYN. I read the report from the operations. Alot I can't understand. It does say they took the tube out because the cyst was wrapped around it. It was 10 cm. I was in pain a long time with it. What is scary is that I have been having horrible pelvic pain in the same area. My period has been non existant for months and now I have it heavier then normal for me. I'm recuperating from major back surgery so the pelvic pain takes a back seat. It could be related to the back. When I go for my check up with the GYN in the spring I will ask her to review all my prior records and see what she says. If I still have pain I assume another ultrasound. What really baffles me is that they say both ovaries are the same size. In 1990 the surgeon said he took a tiny piece of it. In 1995 he said it had rubber bands of scar tissue around it so he took the rest out. I don't think they grow. LOL You would think the left would be smaller. Who knows. My primary doctor said they would have to go in and look at it to be sure. I have already had 10 surgeries for various body parts so I said no. Between that and my back pain has become a daily routine like breathing. I feel bloated with pressure. Hopefully nothing. I'm 42 in a few days so my primary said could be perimenopause.
