Period and lump in breast

I have a quick question. Is it possible to have a lump in your breast a week before your period? I am due to start in a week and I have noticed a lump that moves in my left breast. I am 26. I think it is a lump anyway I'm not real sure. I know I don't feel it on my right side. At my annual appointment in August my Dr told me I had fibroids in my left breast that is probably due to my caffine intake. Is that what I am feeling? If it was cancer would the doctor have been able to tell the difference? I had my Mom feel last night but she said she didn't feel anything. I'm freaking out!

I forgot to mention that my left breast gets really sore two weeks before I start my period!

Re: Period and lump in breast

I highly doubt its cancer. Your doctor would have told you if it was.

Re: Period and lump in breast

Well, I had my Mom feel again and my boyfriend and they both think it is a swollen gland because my period is due next week. It feels like it is a little smaller today. I think I will wait and if in a month it is still there with no changes I will call my DR. He is a wonderful doctor so I am sure he would have felt something just two months ago.

Re: Period and lump in breast

Hi,
I have the exact same thing - and it freaks me out every month because i always think its something bad when its not. I went to see my doctor about it and he refered me to a specialist just to be on the safe side, and basically, they both said, in your 20s, you get lumpy breasts, especially at the time of your period - when you have pmt - it's completely and utterly normal as apparently the breast tissue is still changing in your 20s., but i totally get how worried you feel. If a lump moves around, its not likely at all to be cancer. They are fixed lumps with uneven edges. The doctor would definately know if it was cancerous, or if it was anything to worry about at all - and he would refer you to someone straight away, if he was in anyway unsure.
The advice I was given, is to regularly check your breasts, AFTER your period, because that is when your breasts are at their most unchanging state.
Honestly I dont think there is anything to worry about at all, but its always good to go to the doctor and get his reassurance as well - especially if he is a good doctor that you can trust!
Hope this helped!

Re: Period and lump in breast

Thank you so much for your reply. It did help. I don't know what a "lump" really feels like and when you say uneven edges what does that mean? I read that on the breast cancer board too but have no clue what it is. I don't know the difference between a bad lump and just a lump. When I move my fingers over it, it's like a balloon. If it was cancer would my doctor have known or been able to feel it in August or could this be new? I think after I am off my period (which I am due next Tuesday) I will check and if it is still there and same size I will make an appt with my doctor. He knows I'm a paranoid person lol so he humors me.

Re: Period and lump in breast

I'm not a doctor obviously but from what i have been told by doctors and nurses (i have a lot of friends who's parents are in the medical profession) if a doctor is in ANY doubt whatsoever about anything that could be cancerous they would refer you for tests immediately. If he had felt anything at all that worried him, he just wouldnt take the risk and leave it. Honestly.
Uneven edges is like, it doesnt have clearly defined edges - so when you say it feels like a baloon, i guess you mean that it has rounded edges and its not attached to your breast tissue - you can move it around? thats ok.
Hope that helps.. again! and dont worry again, i know how worried you can feel when you find something like this!
