Refusal of BCPs - Women's Health Message Board

I live in Ontario, Canada and I have heard about two different people that were refused BCP's when they went to walk-in clinics. When my one friend went, she told the doctor what she was there for and the doctor just walked out without saying a word to her. Then the nurse rushed in and apologized and explained that that doctor will not prescribe BCP's. Then a friend of hers went to a different clinic and they apologized and said that they are a Catholic facility and don't distribute BCPs. Without getting into the religious debate, can they get away with that? This worries me because I was just prescribed BCPs but not for birth control, for bad midcycle pain. Has anyone else ever been refused BCPs?

I don't know about BCPs, but I have heard that clinics and even pharmacies don't have to sell the morning after pill because of religious convictions. I'm assuming that it would be similar with the pill?

I can even understand the refusal of providing the morning after pill because (and correct me if I'm wrong) its sole purpose is to terminate pregnancy. But with the BCP, there are so many other uses for it besides birth control, eg. regulating menstrual cycle, relieving cramps, reducing ovarian cysts, etc.

But while it's doing all those other things, it is still preventing pregnancy. I think it's crazy that clinics and pharmacies have that right.

I guess I'll have to correct you then, lol. Regular BCP and the morning after pill work the exact same way, they prevent pregnancies, neither can terminate a pregnancy. I don't want to get into a religious debate either but some religions have different beliefs about those things and they get to draw their line wherever the heck they want, if they're willing to lose customers. They are as entitled to not sell certain items as you are entitled to not shop there.

I think it's a shame that in this day and age we'd have to research which pharmacies and clinics are not ... (don't know what to call it). Anyway, yes it's true that they can get away with that. My suggestion: boycott.
