Longer periods + I'm 17!

Just a little background
Telling from my name, I'm overweight.
I'm 17, about 340lbs and 5'8.
I got my period about 7 days ago, and it's heavier NOW than it was in the beginning/middle of the period.
I had the same thing happen over Christmas - where, it lasted 15 days.
Is there any way I could PREVENT this?
Could it be the birth control I'm on? [Alesse]

Please help, it's driving me crazy!

Were you also on birth control at Christmas time too? Has your doctor talked to you about losing weight?

Weight extremes, either too high or too low can, for some women exacerbate menstrual flow. Women who carry unusually low weight often don't get a period at all, while higher weights sometimes cause unusual bleeding.

Color is also important to note. Did you see or talk to your doctor after the 15-day long period? Since this has happened again it might be a good idea to get in touch with your doctor again.
