Blood Pregnancy Test Question

I don't really think I am pregnant but am starting to doubt myself now. Quick history..... I stopped taking birthcontrol about 4 months ago. Couldn't stand the side effects so just stopped taking them. Had two normal periods but have missed my last two. I was supposed to start on the 1st of June which came and went with no period. Thought it was nothing and would come on next month but it was due to start today and nothing again. No cramping, bloating, nothing. I took two pregnancy test after my first missed period that came out negative however, for my two children, the pregnancy test came back negative for the first month and a half of both pregnancies. I also had a blood pregnancy test done on the 12th because of gallbladder surgery done on the 15th. That came back negative also. My question is, how reliable is the blood pregnancy test. Is it something that will show up positive the minute you become pregnant or is it possible for it not to pick up a pregnancy until a couple weeks into the pregnancy depending on the blood level of each person? Just wondering because a little before lunch today, I got really dizzy and am now nauseated. I called my dr. about my 2 missed periods and he wants me to go in monday but I was just wondering if anyone on here experienced a negative blood pregnancy test result when they were actually pregnant.

Thanks,

Re: Blood Pregnancy Test Question

As far as I know you can get false negatives on the pharmacy preg tests but rarely a false positive and the blood tests are hundred percent accurate very early in pregnancy. You will test positive with the blood test if you are pregnant. Hope this helps, I don't speak from experience as my pregnancies showed up with the urine tests within two weeks from conception.

Re: Blood Pregnancy Test Question

Blood tests can be wrong because there are two types and depending on which type the lab did could have an effect on the results. Though with wha tyou have said with time frame that would put you between 6 to 8 weeks pregnant and either type of blood test would show. Now if my chance you missed the first period by fluke(it happens our bodies do some strange things) then you would be between 6 to 4 weeks pregnant and yet again either blood test would catch it.
The blood tests are qualitative and quantitative. With the first you get a yes or no answer just like an HPT but with the second it measures the amount of HCG in the blood and the rule of thumb is anything over 5 is a positive test.
To show you how good the tests are I only go by blood and with my second son I knew I was pregnant but wanted to confirm with a blood test. I had been charting so I knwo when I Oed. So when I had my blood test I was about 13 days after O and my period normally comes 15 days after Oing. So I was barely pregnant and the blood test picked it up.

Re: Blood Pregnancy Test Question

With both my pregnancies my doctor blood pregnancy tests came back inconclusive after my missed period. BUT, if you are two months I'm sure it would pick it up by now. I myself am on day 48 of my cycle and had light spotting on days 26 through 29. Am going to the doc on Tuesday. There are a lot of other things that can cause missed periods. See what your doc says.
