Has anyone come across this? My daughter is having an MRI tomorrow because the doctor suspects this. She had an ultrasound and it showed something inside her uterus. Doctor said either scar tissue or split uterus. I looked it up on the internet and it seems very confusing to me. The doctor told her either way she will need surgery, the sooner the better. If someone can give me some info on this subject, I would appreciate it. Her symptoms are bloating and pain near her ovary area. Doctor found 2 small cysts on her ovary but said she wasn't too concerned about those. Thanks all. Linda
This could be a few different things. I had a uterine septum, which is a thick wall of tissue dividing the uterus in half. My septum resulted in the premature birth of my son. He was born at 24 weeks gestation, weighing 1lb 13oz, and 12 inches long (he's almost 3 now, and perfectly healthy.) I had two surgeries to remove it, and they were both pretty easy recoveries. I am now having another baby, next week!
It could also be something called didelphys, which is basically two seperate uteri. I am sure there are other possibilities, but those are the two that come to my mind.
Also, the surgery is usually done by a Reproductive Endocrinologist, or fertility specialist. Is this the type of doctor your daughter is seeing?
Hi Lisa, My daugther is seeing just her ob-gyn right now until we find out what the MRI says. Does this uterus cause pain? She has pain mostly during sex and that is why she went to the doctor in the first place. Her paps always came back good and she really has no other problems. Her MRI is this afternoon and we are anxious about it. She's 25 and never had a child yet. Congrats are your new arrival and thank for taking the time to answer my questions. Linda
The only pain I ever had was severe menstrual pain, which may or may not have been caused by the septum. My septum was found during a trans-vaginal ultrasound when I was 32 years old, at my first OB appointment when I was pg with my son. All of my previous pelvic exams had always been totally normal.
I have uterus didelphys. I have a thick, muscular septum dividing my uterus into two. I also had a partial septum extending into my vagina, causing me painful intercourse. I had many pap smears before my doctor finally noticed the vaginal septum. does your daughter have problems using tampons? I could never use them without "leaking". After a few ultrasounds and an IVP, my gyno diagnosed my uterus didelphys. I had surgery this summer to remove the vaginal septum, but there is nothing that can be done at this point for the thick band dividing my uterus. I'm curious if you and your daughter found an answer re her condition. If so, please let us know. Good luck!

Hi Tiggerbuddy, thanks for your response and no she hasn't gotten an answer from her doctor. The doc did say it was not a split uterus. Your response was very imformative. I never heard a of a vaginal septum and it sounds a bit like my duaghters symptoms. She can use a tampon but has a hard time inserting them and removing them. She also has pain during sex and that is what brought her to the doctor in the first place. She may have a lap done in January to see what is exactly going on in there. I will try to keep you informed. Thanks again.
