I am not a doctor nor an obgyn. But I do know some things. And from my personal experience, I can tell you some things to help you. But you DO need to get some tests done.
There is a thing called PCOS (which I have) that can make your cycles have a mind of its own. Some women, like me, have irregular cycles, often painful cramps, longer, and more frequent. I would have a cycle, end it and be fine for a week, then start another cycle at times. Some women with PCOS, they
would just simply have no cycle. And some just like you said, just a small handful a year.
Not all women with PCOS share the same symptoms. These are some of the symptoms of PCOS:

So, if I were you, I would schedule a doctor appointment and have some tests done. PCOS now can be diagnosed by fitting a profile from a medical professional. And I am sure there are other problems that can cause what you said as well too. And if you do have PCOS, it is treatable. The most often treatment for it is birth control and metformin. In fact, that is what I do to. But please make an appointment with your doctor, we can only swap stories and give info here, we cant make a diagnoses.
