So much pain.

I went to the doctors on Monday morning and they said I had gastronitis(?), stomach bug. I was puking for 3 straight days, unable to even keep water down. Not only that, my stomach had such sharp pains it was unbearable. So she gave me an anti-nausea shot, which helped. No more vomiting, but now my stomach hurts so bad I just can't take it.

Theres 2 catches though. I was in the hospital almost exactly a month ago with the same problems. They had me on IV and IV Dilaudid. A week in the hospital with scans, rays, and even an ultra sound... What they came up with is that I had a popped cyst on my ovary, they said there was some fluid there. Then the next day they told me I had a kidney stone, too! but it wasn't moving, so it "shouldn't hurt" I left the hospital after a week with the diagnosis of 'acute gastronitis'...
ok, then, now almost a month later, the same problem. However, the same spot is still hurting. Its on my left side, on my actual side, 2 inches away from my belly button, right in the middle of my side. It's the worst pain possible. I don't vomit anymore, don't feel sick to my stomach, but I am sweating up a storm (maybe from pain?) and have loose stools. Going to the bathroom does not relieve the pain. I've been taking left over medicine from last time for IBS but it's not helping.

My question is, what does this sound like? Does the 'stomach bug' last this long? Should I be in the hospital again? The scans last time came up with a popped cyst on the OPPOSITE side where it doesn't hurt and the kidney stone came up on the side where it does.. but a month ago the doctor said it wasn't moving...?

please help.

Re: So much pain, I want to die.

Hi

I am sorry to hear you are in so much pain.

What you describe sounds a lot the way I had pain years ago and it turned out to be an ovarian cyst. My pain was located in the same area, only on the right side. It went on for some weeks and got worse and worse. I would like maybe I needed to have a bowel movement, but no, that wasn't it. And even having a movement did not result in a let up of the pain. I finally ended up in an emergency room and had emergevncy surgery to have an ovarian cyst removed. It had grown to the size of a bowling ball!

Please get back to the doctor and tell them that you know something is wrong! Go to the emergency room if need be.

Best wishes that whatever it is is soon diagnosed and you find relief.

I am surprised they didn't check your gallbladder. It sounds a little like a gallstone attack.

Re: So much pain, I want to die.

zaerobella,

I agree with reachout, it does sound like an ovarian cyst. When you said they did an ultrasound, was it an "Inturnal" ultrasound? If not, I recomend you seeing a GYN and get one. They are much more accurate than a regular ultrasound.
The pain you are in is NOT a normal part of life. It's your body telling you something is wrong! The sweating, loose stools, and the fact its exactly a month later sounds very "cyclic" as a cyst on an ovary would be. I have ovarian cysts myself, and Thank GOd Ive never had one rupture, but I have heard they are VERY painful when they do! A visit to a GYN may just rule in or out wether that is what your dealing with.

I wish you the best, and please let us know how you make out.
Take care, GOd bless.
Annette

If you didn't pass your stone it could be that too. Maybe it moved through your bladder now. That causes horrific pain. Personally I don't think its a stomach bug. Good Luck

Re: So much pain, I want to die.

Have any of your doctors considered the possiblility that this could be c. diff.?

It's one of those bugs (spores) that is plaguing hospitals, and is very difficult to shake. I had two bouts with it after being on a strong antibiotic, which eliminates good flora and fauna from your intestines, leaving c.diff. to run wild.

Finally eliminated it with Flagyl.

Re: So much pain, I want to die.

Wanted to update everyone.

I went to the ER yesterday. I may be healthy at my age, but I'm really not. I have severe Multiple Sclerosis, low immune system and a lot of pain with my disease. I went after my family doctor told me to go if I'm still having vomiting, nausea and dehydration. I waited 4 hours before seeing anyone. The nurse that saw me was absolutely rude to begin with. Rolling her eyes, telling us "she's" too "busy". I told them that I was in the hospital a month before with the same case: I can't drink, eat, I'm sick, I'm in a lot of stomach pain, vomiting and with a fever. I also told them that the last time I was there, they found a ruptured cyst on my ovary and a kidney stone. I knew there had to be something else wrong causing this extreme pain and sickness.

I never saw a doctor. I saw an intern, never spoke to a specialist or anyone who know what they were doing. Never asked what was going on. They end up telling me I have a kidney stone and a cyst (I knew that!) All they performed was a CT Scan. My family doctor says they can perform tests for gallstones, ulcers, etc. They did not. The intern comes in to tell me to get dressed and leave, that they have "no idea whats wrong" with me, whilst I'm screaming crying from pain and can barely walk. I need assistance to walk and get dressed with my MS, no one helped, they just watched me stumble around, especially watch me fall almost 3 times going to the bathroom. At one point, I asked my nurse when the CT Scan results will be in and her answer was "Well, it's Sunday and no ones here, so expect a very long time to wait" with a nice eyeroll to boot.

I will be trying another hospital as I'm getting WORSE and no better. Are you not supposed to go to the ER when you are getting worse and no better? I have insurance, really excellent insurance. My mother and I were treated so awful today in the ER room of Memorial Hospital (in Mt. Holly, NO ONE GO THERE!!!), I am outraged.

So today I'm going to a hospital that has treated me great in the past, Our Lady Of Lourdes, to see what's going on. I'm still getting worse and cannot keep down my own pain meds for any kind of pain.

To answer some questions, the tests I have had in the past were a CT scan and an ultra sound of the belly, and "inside" myself..? They put this big probe into my vagina to check around.

To be exact, the pain is under my left breast/rib bone. You can hear it gurgling. The pain also radiates to my side. It gets worse when I'm active/walking, or under stress. I wouldn't be surprised if I had an ulcer.

Also: wanted to add that last night I tried taking a hot bath and putting a heat pad on it to see if it would settle down, but it did not at all. The bath helped, just because of the relaxation but started soon as I got out again.

The pain has been coming and going for a month now, in the same exact spot.. don't think a bug would do that.. ?

Re: So much pain, I want to die.

sorry for all your pain. You're too young to be suffering like that. Were you just diagonised with MS? Do you go to a specialist for your MS? You need to see a gastro doctor for another opinion. No, it can't be from a stomach bug. It's been going on to long now. If your cyst did burst, that could cause a lot of pain. You need to find another doctor, probably a specialist.
Get to another hospital. Good Luck

Re: So much pain, I want to die. [UPDATE!]

IF ANYONE, and I mean ANYONE has pain like this please PLEASE do not give up and keep getting tests done! If I didn't, I would be in worse shape than ever.

So I went to a GI doctor. They took me right away because they called me an "emergency case"... because of the constant vomiting for 3 weeks, I've lost a total of 11lbs! I couldn't keep down liquids, food, even soft food, or especially important, my medicine. Medicine that helps me with my Multiple Sclerosis, too.

As soon as I pinpointed where the pain was, the doctor knew right away. He felt the area, told me my stomach was at a 45 degree angle and was swollen. He basically said the hospital were a bunch of idiots to not know this. Also, I could actually pinpoint the problem area instead of "I have a belly ache", so he told me pursue my complaints on the hospital (anyone in south jersey, do NOT go to the Virtua Hospital in Mt. Holly)

2 Days later I went in and under. I was put to sleep and he went in with a camera through my stomach. I have a huge ulcer in my esophagus, which happens to be the most painful, damaging if left untreated and hardest ulcer to cure. He thinks it's from my pills, the powder from them stem around down there because I'm not drinking enough water to wash them fully down. On top of that, I have not one, but THREE ulcers in my actual stomach. To add to the case, because of my MS, I am not digesting my food correctly and food is being stored in my stomach. Told me he couldn't believe I went on for over a month with this. I have two liquids I have to drink 4 times a day to coat my esophagus and stomach, also Nexium. As far as right now, I have not vomited or had any stomach pain. (knock on wood)

I was diagnosed 2 years ago. The thing was, I was in the Children's Hospital in the 7th grade because I lost feeling in my legs. They had no idea what it was, my Neuro at UPenn thinks I might have had MS since I was age 11. Insane! My doc at UPenn is actually a teacher and specialist in MS, I lucked totally out. She actually told me they were fighting over my case because of my age and how severe my MS actually is. So I know I will have help none of the less.

Thanks everyone!

Re: So much pain, I want to die.

Start taking a high potency probiotic every day, along with a teaspoon of Metamucil Fibresure

Take Immodium for gut cramps, and Dramamine for nausea.

Ask for a referal to a gastroenterologist

Re: So much pain, I want to die.

Glad you finally got a diagnosis. Ulcers are rather painful but I'm glad that's all it was. Stay on the nexium, that will heal your ulcer. Also take it easy on your stomach for a while, don't overeat, not much fats, etc. You should heal in no time. Feel better Linda
