Found a lump, need your advice!

I need some advice. I just had a mammogram 8 weeks ago. I was given a clean bill of health. I am 43 and every year I have to have an ultra sound too because I have dense fibrous breasts. I get cysts every year. I had one 8 weeks ago but I couldn't feel it. Now I found a lump in my left breast about the size of a grape up near the nipple. It doesn't hurt but it's like it appeared out of no where. I just happen to feel it because I was doing a little check. Now I am freaked out. The doc has told me I have fibrocystic breasts. So my question to anyone who will answer me. Since I just had a mammo 8 weeks ago. Could I get cancer this quick? And should I be seen right away? Or for those of you who have fibrocystic breasts....do you get cysts that crop up that go down as you make your way through the month or so?? I really need your help. Of course I am alarmed and will call my doctor in the morning. But I could use some advice. THANK YOU!!

I have fibrocystic breasts as well and can certainly identify with what you're going through. I've had mammograms and then found lumps some months out and would worry myself silly. I always end up just going ahead and going to my doctor to get his advice since that is the only way that I've feel better about things. Fortunately mine have never been a problem. About five years ago I switched to a group of doctors (mainly women) who are "Breast Care Specialists". Since I always have problems I felt that it would be better to go this direction. With every mammogram that I get I also have an ultrasound as well as a doctor do a manual check. I feel much better having this done.

Go ahead and schedule an appointment just so you'll feel better. Let us know, I'm sure all is fine though.

Re: Found a lump, need your advice!

TEdwards,
Be sure and let us know what you find out. I never felt the lumps the mammo saw, so I had no idea. But when the radiologist called me this morning it put my mind to rest - A little bit at least. She told me the masses were small, round & have smooth edges which I guess is a good sign. I go for my ultra sound & additional films this Weds.
You, Cody & myself all sound to have similar issues - Dense breasts - Does that mean they're stupid????
Maybe if we send them to college they will STOP GETTING LUMPY!!!!!

Re: Found a lump, need your advice!

TEdwards,

I just saw a breast surgeon today for a small lump that did not show up on mamogram or ultrasoud. (see my post below). He was quite confident it was nothing - I got the impression that he knows the feel of a bad lump, since this is what his specialty is. I don't have dense breasts, so I'm comfortable with the mamo and ultrasound not showing something that might be 'hidden' .

I'm gong back for a re-check in a month to make sure it didn't grow or change, but I'm relaxed about it for now. I don't think breast cancer just pop's up one day (I also had a clear mamogram in April). From all I've read and have been told, it takes quite a few years to develop. I do think things like cysts can develop quickly - and change with your cycle.

Hope this helps. Let us know how your appointment on the 7th goes.

Mary

Susieq, that is just TOO funny! If college could keep them from being so dense I would go for it in a minute.

Re: Found a lump, need your advice!

Thanks ladies! I have tried to put it out of my mind until next monday morning. That's when my regular doctor will check me out and then send me down for an ultrasound. I just think it is odd it came out of no where when I have a clean mammo and ultra sound just 6 weeks ago. I think the little cyst we found is in the same spot where this one is now bigger. Perhaps it is the same one, (i hope) and since my period is due in 5 to 7 days perhaps it is my lumpy time of the month. lol Maybe that is what we can call it.

I have been busy the past few days being a caregiver for a 32 year old gal who is one in 200 people (in the whole world) with a rare autoimmuine disorder. It is making her go blind, lose hearing, and lose bladder control. I was with her all morning at the eye doctor as they told her she is going blind. Her mom met me and they administered to the hospital for a 5 day treatment of steriods and chemo. She has two small children and her husband left her two years ago when she became ill. It is so sad and she is fighting for her life. So when I start to worry about my little issues, I try to remember how I can help someone else and quit worrying about my problems. It helps alot. Please keep this woman in your prayers because doctors don't want to treat her since it is rare and they are clueless about the disease. Thanks! Luckily someone took resposibilty today at the hospital and admitted her for treatment. Thank the Lord!

Re: Found a lump, need your advice!

Hi everyone. I too have been told I have fibrocystic breasts. I found a lump about 2 months ago that felt a lot like a grape under the skin. It was smooth, oval, and moved. My doctor thought it was just a cyst and sent me for an ultrasound just in case. Nothing showed up. So he said it was just fibrocystic tissue and may never go away- just fluctuate with the cycle. A second doctor did an exam and he said the same thing. I'm a worrier so I check all the time. I've recently discovered nipple discharge from both sides. It's whitish. I had a baby 7 months ago and my doctor said it was residual milk/ hormones. Does all of this sound right? I'm asking mostly because of the fact that nothing showed up on ultrasound- no cysts. I'm trying to have faith in my doctor, but it's hard with the horror stories you read!

Re: Found a lump, need your advice!

So let me ask...are you saying if I have a cyst it can stay there and just go up and down in size?? I was wondering that because we found a cyst in my left breast about the same location as this one. But at the time I couldn't feel it, but now I can. I just want them to take another peek with the ultrasound so I don't have to sit and worry. It is hard to have fibrocystic breasts because it always gives great concern that it could be breast cancer. Thanks for anyone who wants to respond.

Hi T,
When I had my ultra sound the doctor said these cysts can stay just as they are, get bigger, or dissolve. It depends on how your body deals with them and what you personal habits are. (diet, exercise, etc,,,,) If they grow and become uncomfortable, you can have them aspirated, but they sometimes come back. You can also have them removed via surgery.
Someone told me to stay away from caffine and soda pop. She also said to wear sports bras when possible, and take warmer showers and let the water hit your breasts. (Don't know why that makes a difference, but at this point I am up to anything!) She also said jumping gently on an exercise trampoline helps too. (Again, I don't know why,,,)
At least we have post menopause to look forward to. These issues we have should go away by then.

Re: Found a lump, need your advice!

Thanks Susie! I appreciate your advice. I have tried not to worry over the past few days. I go to my regular doctor tomorrow and I am sure she may have me head in for an ultra sound to be sure. But I really do appreciate the tips. I think I will be more faithful with my workouts. I am glad we have each other to talk to. Thanks so much!
Tammy

Re: Found a lump, need your advice!

Hi again. I'm not sure about cysts going up and down in size. My ultrasound didn't detect anything-no cyst or mass. So my doctor just said it's fibrocystic tissue-I'm guessing dense area of normal breast tissue. He said what feels like a lump to me which is just dense or fibrous tissue would fluctuate in size. I can't say that mine feels like it has changed size. It kind of feels like sometimes it's harder to find and sometimes the tissue feels less "swollen". My sister has a friend who experienced the same thing-felt lump but nothing showed up on ultrasound. She said that it sometimes goes down in size to the point it seems like it's gone and then it will come back for a few months before it shrinks back down. She also got a lump in the inside of her lip and they told her it was the same thing-hormones. I hate hormones:-) I have had enough this last year. I barely survived my pregnancy hormones only to find out there was a lot more to experience after I had my baby.

Be sure and let us know what the doc says. I am sure you are fine! The ultra sound will put your mind at ease and then you can start working on feeling better.

P.S. I wore a sports bra all weekend and it really does make a difference!

Re: Found a lump, need your advice!

HI Ladies! I went to my regular doctor today. She felt the lump. We figured out it is a new one that was not detected 6 weeks ago on the mammogram or ultrasound. Can you believe it? This one is large enough to feel and is at the 2 o clock position the other small one is at the 6 o clock position. She really thinks its a cyst. It is perfectly round and smooth. But for safety and peace of mind I have an ultrasound on wednesday (2 days from now) and I will hope for the best. I am trying not to think about it. It's in God's hands. Worrying just makes me feel worse. Thanks! I will keep you posted!
