Exclamation BV? UTI? I'm not sure. Please help I'm so scared!

About a month ago, directly after a smear test, I started getting itching and burning in and around my vagina. I thought it was thrush and treated it using an over the counter drug. This didn't work so a week later I went to the doctor and had swabs and a urine test done (these were for thrush, BV and UTI - STDs not a possibility). All results came back clear and my doctor insists nothing's wrong and wouldn't do any more to help. Two weeks after this the burning and itching has almost gone using acidophilus capsules but I still have slight burning when I pee and a constant uncomfortable sort of warm burning feeling around my pubic bone (feels a bit like it's in my urethra) which worsens when my bladder is full. Occasionally I get slight stabbing pains here as well. However, I don't constantly need to go to the toilet as normally happens with a UTI (although it can feel a bit like this sometimes - a sort of mild version). Could it still be a UTI even though I tested clear? Or BV? I'm extremely worried and don't feel my doctor is any use. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what this could be? Please help me

I'm having the stabby feelings near my urethra when my bladder is full, too. I also feel like I might have a yeast infection, but no typical signs of it--just burny feeling. Regular urinalysis & culture testing of my urine is showing no bladder infection. But, from past experience, I know that agar-plate cultures don't catch things that could be causing problems as well as BROTH culture testing does. There are only a few labs in the USA that do this type of test. They always have found infective bacteria for me in the past, and I bet they will now, too. I got better by taking Augmentin. Sometimes for as long as 5 months, sometimes for as short as 10 days. I'm going to send my specimen into United Medical Labs in McLean, VA momentarily. I also plan to see my gyn in a few days in case this is just a menopause-related thing.
Hugs,
Maggie C.

Maggie

Thank you so much for responsing - you've made me feel better already!

Is it possible to have a UTI without the symptom of frequently urgently needing to urinate?

I'm in the UK so don't have much choice about where to get samples tested but I might insist the doctor does another urine sample test. I'm sure they're missing something.

I don't have frequency unless I'm drinkling a lot of water. I do have the weird feeling in my urethra that I am taking to be a type of urgency signal. Sometimes, even if no bacteria show up on a urine test, a doctor will try an "empirical" trial of antibiotic with a patient to just see if they respond in a positive way. If your cultures keep coming back negative, your doctor might consider that. It is augmentin that always has helped me when nothing else would. By the way, United Medical Labs in McLean, VA will do broth testing for international customers. I think it just costs more. You might look on their website. Are you menopausal age, by any chance?

All the best,
Maggie C.

No I'm 27. What you've described about an 'urgency signal' is just what I'm getting I think. And then I get the burning when I pee - but not at the beginning, just towards the end.

I'm also slightly worried there might now be blood in my urine but it's hard to tell because I'm on my period. But directly after I've finished emptying my bladder there is a heavy gush of blood. I've by-passed my doctor and made an appoinment with the GU clinic to see if they're any better.

I've just checked and I'm sure the blood that 'gushes' straight after I urinate is from my vagina - presumably linked to my period. But it's still a little strange, it's never happened like this before????

Burning is a definitive sign of a bladder infection. Hopefully, if you ask for a urine culture, it will come back showing a bacteria that's causing this mess for you. If it says everything is fine, I'd suggest looking up the Cystitis Research Center online. It will link to the United Medical Labs site for broth culture testing. Write back when you find out what's going on with you.

Hugs & prayers,
Maggie C.
