Unhappy I have to have a colposcopy and I'm so scared

On Friday my OB/GYN called me up to tell me that my pap test came back abnormal so she wants to do a colposcopy and I'm so scared it's going to hurt. I told her that I have bad anxiety problems and she said I won't be able to get knocked out or get numb for it then I told her that I may end up passing out which won't be good. Also, I may have a biopsy of my cervix and I'm so angry that I have to go through this crap as I have enough problems.

When she told me I couldn't stop crying, that's how bad I'm getting. She told me that it won't hurt I would just feel some discomfort and probably some crampling like I'm having a period. I'm so confused as so many women told me it won't hurt and I don't know what to believe. Also, my OB/GYN had to prescribe me Diazepam 2 mgs and I have to take 1 before the precedure and 4 ibprofins an hour before. I hope taking these different pills will help me and hopefully I can get a ride if not I have to drive myself which won't be good

I hope someone can help me with this I'm very scared and my precedure has to get done on Wednesday

Please note that your thread has been moved here to the Women's Health Board.
You'll likely find more advice on the precedure here.

Re: I have to have a colposcopy and I'm so scared

Hi, I understand your fears, but please don't be scared. I have high anxiety / panic, too. I had to have a colposcopy twice. From my experience, it does not hurt, it's just a little bit uncomfortable and annoying. What really helped me is to breathe slowly. To do this, inhale SLOWLY through your diaphragm to the count of 5 (to breathe through your diaphragm, your tummy will inflate out), then exhale slowly through your diaphragm to the count of 8 (your tummy will deflate in). If you concentrate on your breathing, it will calm you down and help take your mind off of what the doctor is doing. For any type of anxiety, this is what helps me. Also, when you breathe, it puts you in the moment, so you are not worrying about anything else but your breathing. Good luck! You are not alone. Other people have been there and have gone through it. You can, too.

Re: I have to have a colposcopy and I'm so scared

i have also had 2 done. Im a huge wussie and also suffer from panic and anxiety. It was not bad at all. The most i felt was a pinch with the biopsy. My doc actually kept me talking though it so i had my mind occupied. I also get woozey after anything even blood drawing so i just brought some juice to drink to get my sugar back up and just took things slow after he was done with the getting dressed. Your gonna be fine dont worry. I even had my mom come with me

Unhappy Re: I have to have a colposcopy and I'm so scared

Hi Starrisa,

No I'm not alone about this precedure, I just done understand I had a normal pap test last July and I don't know why it changed to abnormal all I can say maybe my HPV has alot to do with it.

I have to get this done tomorrow morning at 10:30a.m and I have to take a Valium 2 hours before and 4 Advils an hour before. When I was in my mid 20's my pap test was abnormal then I had another one done within 6 months and I was normal. The nurse that did my pap test in England didn't do a colposcopy on me.

What happens if it comes back abnormal again? what other treatment will I have to have again? another colposcopy and I hope not.
