Possibly UTI Relapse - Women's Health Message Board

First time poster, FYI.

I'm nineteen years old, and over the summer I had a urinary tract infection which went undiagnosed for almost two months. In August it was finally properly diagnosed, I was given a ten-day medication (taken twice daily) which cleared up the infection.

Recently (within the past two weeks or so) my boyfriend and I began having sex. Before this we were both virgins. We've had sex five times now. I mention all of this just in case it's relevant.

On Sunday I noticed it hurts when I urinate and I have to urinate more frequently (much like over the summer). I also notice my urine is cloudy and it smells, if I may use a food analogy, like bacon. I don't have any other symptoms (other than lower back pain). I'm thinking this is a relapse of my urinary tract infection. Any thoughts?

Yes, it sounds like you are having a relapse and you should see the doctor ASAP. If you are having lower back pain, the infection may have spread to your kidneys and you need immediate attention.

Although it isn't sexy and can sometimes break up the mood, I would also suggest urinating after intercourse. I have had recurrent bladder infections for ten years and this has helped me immensely. My doctor has also suggested drinking cranberry juice as it is supposed to prevent the bacteria from sticking to the walls of your bladder.
